The final solution begins | Sandusky Register 75 years ago, 1942: Heinrich Himmler, head of the Nazi Gestapo, ordered one-half of the large Jewish population in occupied Poland be exterminated by the end of the year, reports from Polish underground said. The first step in the bloody program would be to kill 50 percent of the thousands of Jews living in Ghettos established by the Nazis. The remainder would be "liquidated" later. There were 3,113,900 Jews in Poland according to a 1931 census.
