School project to evolve, elevate SCCS

SANDUSKY — A transformational project not only aims to elevate and evolve Sandusky Central Catholic School for all stakeholders but also enhance the city, community and neighborhood it has called home for decades. Earlier this month, school leaders announced a $16.5 million building project to modernize, update and better activate its West Jefferson Street campus in Sandusky. So far, $13 million has been raised that will be put toward the plan's total cost. During the past year, the school has collaborated with local families, alumni, investors and community leaders to launch its Beyond Boundaries: The Campaign for Sandusky Central Catholic School, which will raise funds to evolve not only the school but the Sandusky community, according to a release from the school. "Our vision is simple yet powerful: to create a campus that reflects the excellence already happening inside our classrooms," school president Ryan Wikel said. "With the partnership of this community, we can build a learning environment worthy of our students, our teachers and our mission." The project will enhance facilities, expand the campus, elevate academic programming and invest in the educators responsible for shaping students. It will also benefit the local community by contributing to the beautification and revitalization of downtown, strengthening neighborhood investment, increasing nearby home value and creating a welcoming space for community connection. Details of the project include a new dining commons, which the school's release described as "a vibrant gathering space designed not only for students but also for community events, celebrations and shared experiences that bring people together." The new space will take students out of the basement dining space. Other project details involve a/an: • Welcome center • State-of-the-art science super lab for "hands-on, future-ready learning" • Updated kitchen facility supporting safety and long-term sustainability • Handicap-accessible elevator • Hall-of-fame legacy lobby, honoring people and traditions through school history Regarding the $13 million already raised, nearly all financial support has come from individuals and alumni. The school is now looking for partnerships with businesses, organizations and foundations to contribute to the vision. "This campaign is about more than buildings," Wikel said. "It is about faith, opportunity, innovation, and creating a place where future generations can thrive."
