2 injured in shooting

FREMONT — An 18-year-old man is facing charges after a girl was shot in Fremont on Thursday. Just after 1:30 a.m., officers were called to the 1300 block of Fleetwood Drive for the report of a person with a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they found a female with a wound to her right ankle, according to a Fremont police report. Through interviewing witnesses, officers determined a group of teens was gathered in a shed at the Fleetwood Drive home. The 18-year-old was allegedly intoxicated and showing off a small black handgun, according to the report. Multiple witnesses told police a similar story: that the man was not threatening anyone with the gun; he was just showing it off while intoxicated and it went off, the report states. The female victim was taken to a Fremont hospital. While there, the 18-year-old showed up with a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers attempted to question the man but he shook his head to every question asked, including who shot him, if he shot himself and where he ditched the gun. The man's mother had picked him up and the police asked for consent to search the car for evidence. The woman initially agreed, according to the report, but then changed her mind and refused. Officers then threatened to tow the car to preserve evidence. That threat made the woman decide to grant consent. Investigators discovered what they believed was blood, but did not locate a firearm, the report states. The man was charged with negligent assault, a third-degree misdemeanor and using weapons while intoxicated, a first-degree misdemeanor. The charges were turned into warrants. As of late Sunday, the Fremont Municipal Court website lists the warrants as active. The man does not appear in the Sandusky County jail roster. The gun still has not been recovered as of late Thursday, according to Fremont police Chief Derek Wensinger. The school resource officer at Atkinson Elementary was notified that officers were searching for the gun on the school grounds, Wensinger said.
