Man pleads not guilty to child rape charges

PORT CLINTON — A Port Clinton man accused of sexually assaulting two children appeared Wednesday in the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court.Bryan Hofacker, 41, pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape. His pretrial was scheduled for Aug. 30, his final pretrial for Oct. 2 and the jury trial for Oct. 8.The charges against him stem from a Port Clinton police investigation, which began in April after a 14-year-old girl accused Hofacker of raping her multiple times.The girl told detectives when he was intoxicated he would allegedly wake her up in the middle of the night and cover her mouth, so she couldn't scream, as he sexually assaulted her, according to a police report.During Detective Ronald Timmons' investigation, he discovered the girl's 17-year-old sister had also accused Hofacker of raping her when she was in the first grade, the report states.Both girls claimed the rapes happened when he was either intoxicated or high off of heroin. People told police Hofacker was known to blackout and became a different person when he was intoxicated, according to the report. He allegedly admitted to not remembering things when he was intoxicated, but he denied the allegations. Hofacker told police he would have dreams of "doing something like that and he would think it was real," but he never had dreams of raping children, the report states.Hofacker said he would've remembered something like that and claimed he knew "in his heart" that it didn't happen.
