A marvelous 100th for Margaret

PERKINS TWP. — They celebrated this new centenarian's birthday in style. On Friday, one day shy of her actual 100th birthday, many people came together to attend a birthday party in honor of Perkins Township resident Margaret Kelley. About 60 friends and family members gathered at Strickfaden Park on Bell Avenue, awaiting Kelley, who arrived in a parade-like fashion via motorcade. Perkins Township fire trucks and police cruisers guided Kelley to the celebration's site. Underneath the park's pavilion, guests gathered where they heard three proclamations, all in tribute to Kelley, read aloud by township trustee Tim Coleman. Afterward, people could eat snacks and desserts served by township officials. Local resident Lori Hohler, who's maintained a close friendship with Kelley, paid for the food and decorations. They also dropped off their gifts and cards to Kelley, who expressed her deepest appreciation for the love shown her way. "It's wonderful. I'm having a wonderful time," said Kelley, who wore a celebratory crown and sash. "The people are so marvelous and kind to me." Stephanie McDermott, a Perkins police officer who's involved in many community efforts, helped organize the event. In fact, McDermott personally drove Kelley to the party. The two formed a bond about a year ago and have remained close ever since then. McDermott, who affectionately calls Kelley "Granny," wanted to do something special for her. "Granny is an important part of our community," McDermott said. "When I stop by her house, she is so interesting to talk with about her life experiences and living in Ireland." McDermott then reflected on the importance of recognizing standout residents of the township, especially senior citizens. "It's important that we celebrate those who have laid the foundation for our community," McDermott said. "Without them, we wouldn't have what we have today. And we are appreciative of everyone who came out today." This weekend, friends and family members plan on hosting a big get-together at Vita with Kelley as the reason why. People traveled from as far away as California, Nebraska and South Carolina to attend one or both of these parties. "It's really nice that so many people are coming together for her," said Jennifer Torres, one of her many great-granddaughters. Torres, in fact, relayed a story about Kelley voting in the May primary election this week. She's never missed an election since coming to Ohio from Ireland. Kelley then shared her secret to living a long and worthwhile life. "Be kind and be helpful to one another," she said. "You will always see the results." Proclaiming her greatness During her birthday party, Perkins Township trustee Tim Coleman read aloud three resolutions: one coming from county commissioners, one autographed by President Donald Trump and one he and the two other local elected officeholders — fellow trustees Jim Lang and James Ommert — wrote themselves. Here's how the Perkins Township proclamation reads: • Margaret Kelley was born on May 16, 1926, in Belfast, Ireland, to James and Margaret Leslie and was one of five children. • At the age of 18, Margaret met and married an American soldier, remaining in Ireland until the conclusion of World War II before bravely journeying to the U.S. by boat, enduring nine days at sea with only $12 in her possession, demonstrating extraordinary courage, resilience and determination in pursuit of a better life. • Upon settling in the U.S., Margaret and her husband raised their three children — twin daughters, Joyce and June, and son, Les — instilling in them the values of hard work, devotion and steadfast faith in the lord. • Margaret dedicated her life to caring for her family as a homemaker and later contributed her time and effort working at Barr Rubber, helping to support her household with diligence and grace. • After the end of her first marriage, Margaret found love again when she met Emmett Kelley at the senior center while playing bingo. The two were united in marriage in 1967, creating a strong and loving blended family of seven adult children: her three and his four. • Margaret and Emmett built a vibrant family life together in their large farmhouse on Mason Road, farming land in Perkins and Oxford townships. Following his passing, she became a proud resident of Perkins Township for over 30 years. • Margaret Kelley's legacy lives on through her loving family, including her three children, four stepchildren, 76 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren with four more on the way this summer. • Margaret's life stands as a testament to faith, family, perseverance and the enduring spirit of those who seek opportunity and build a legacy through love and hard work. • The board, on behalf of the citizens of Perkins Township, honors and recognizes the remarkable life of Margaret Kelley as a township centenarian. • It is hereby proclaimed that May 16, 2026, is Margaret Kelley Day in the township.
