Port Clinton's library has new smartphone app

PORT CLINTON — Patrons of Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton and branch libraries in Marblehead and South Bass Island are invited to use the library's new app.The free app is available for Apple, Android and Amazon smartphones. Just search for "Ida Rupp" in the relevant software store.The new app has more modern software and is easier to navigate than the library's old app, said Amber Cupp, the library's community engagement coordinator.Among the app's features: The ability to use Bluetooth to get messages from iBeacon technology."If they have something on hold and they walk into the building, Beacon will send a notification that they have a hold available," she said.With the new app, users can also:• Have their library card digitally available on their phones.• Search the catalog on their phones and put a book, music CD or movie on hold.• Renew items before they become overdue.• Check library events, add an event to your calendar and share events with others.• Book a library meeting room for an event.• Get iBeacon notifications (which must be enabled.)Users who use services such as Hoopla Digital and Zinio will still need to use separate apps.Library patrons in Sandusky and many other local libraries, like those in Huron, Norwalk, Clyde and Fremont can download the BookMyne app, allowing them to search the big CLEVNET catalog and have items sent to their local library.Reach reporter Tom Jackson at jackson@sanduskyregister.com and follow him on Twitter @jacksontom.
