Free safety expo set for Sunday

SANDUSKY — Erie Islands Sailing and Powerboating School along with Safe Harbor Sandusky Marina are kicking off National Safe Boating Week. with a free educational resource and training session "to help keep us safe on Lake Erie," according to an event statement. The week spanning May 16-22 marks National Safe Boating Week. It serves as the unofficial start to boating season with partners promoting life-saving safety habits. The local event, free and open to anyone, takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1 Huron St., Sandusky, at the open pavilion by the docks. People can arrive on foot, by car or even via boat. For those attending the event, people can: • Receive a free vessel safety check from the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary • See a demonstration of training, weather permitting, from the On-Water National Safe Boating Council and American Boating training curriculum • Sign up for two free raffles, which include a duffle bag made from. recycled sails by a local vendor and a one-year BoatUS Saltwater Towing membership • Learn about class options and participate in live powerboating training demos • Hear about water safety and what happens if you're approached by a patrol boat • Get an up-close look at a Coast Guard patrol boat • Discover the latest fishing regulations and tips on boater safety, including a life jacket demonstration People can call Erie Islands Sailings at 419-376-3430 for more information.
