Art competition creates community engagement

Editor's note: Darian Shepherd, a local artist, recently launched a new event called Art Versus, a live art competition designed to bring together local artists and activate the area's creative community. SANDUSKY — The inaugural Art Versus event recently took place at The Emporium at West Market Street and featured five local artists competing in a two-round, live-painting format in front of an engaged audience: • Eve London, winner of the first competition • Kylee Frederick • Caleb Hitchcock • Jacob Dawkins • Hazel Boulis The final round came down to a high-energy 25-minute showdown between London and Frederick with London ultimately taking the top spot. The event was supported by a panel of local judges — including artist Marsha Carrington; art teacher and community leader Rosalyn Shepherd; and artist and arts commission member Gregg Mello — helping guide the outcome alongside audience participation. Art Versus was made possible through support from Shores & Islands Ohio, The Emporium and the Great Lakes Visual & Performing Arts Academy along with additional contributions from local businesses, like Vita, which sponsored two $50 gift cards for finalists. The grand prize included $100 cash and a $100 gift card to Lena Brows & Beauty Bar. Beyond the competition itself, the event created a strong sense of community engagement and highlighted the depth of artistic talent in the region. It also opened the door for future collaborations, as more artists and local businesses have already expressed interest in being involved. This event was designed as a starting point, and based on its success, I'm planning the next Art Versus event for July with an expanded format and additional opportunities for artists to participate and showcase their work. My goal with this series is to continue building a platform that supports local artists, encourages collaboration and helps position Sandusky as a growing creative hub.
