PREP ROUNDUP: Van Sickle drives in winning run for Huron

CLYDE — A change of scenery ultimately didn't affect the Huron softball team. The fourth-seeded Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat fifth-seeded Ashland Crestview 6-5 in a Division V tournament opener at Clyde High School. The game was moved to Clyde due to poor field conditions at Huron. The Tigers improved to 10-7 and will face second-seeded Elmwood (20-7) in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. next Wednesday at Clyde. Crestview (10-9) went up 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Tigers tied the game in the bottom half on a groundout from Madison Holeman. That scored Rylie Dehn, who singled before stealing second and third. In the seventh, Tori Cepec walked with one out. Lucy Hinners followed with a run before Adelyn Van Sickle smacked the game-winning single to score courtesy runner Peyton Gammie. Lilly Porter and Emma Gebhardt each had two hits for the seventh-seeded Sailors (4-18) and Gebhardt had two RBI. Second-seeded Clear Fork improved to 20-7. Owen Price got the pitching win, going 4 2/3 innings, and went 3 for 4 at the plate with a triple, single, two runs and two RBI. Tristian Wetherill added two hits and drove in four runs for the Division V No. 9 Chargers, who improved to 15-3. Bryson Wittmer, Cole Leimeister, Brody McFadden and Ian Preston all added two hits for Edison, which plays at Perkins on Thursday. Colt Flores had a double and two singles for Clyde (5-13). Carson Burkett's walk-off single scored Cade Reineck with the winning run. Braden Hall doubled and singled for the Tigers (10-9), who scored only one run over the final six innings. Hall led off the eighth with a double and advanced to third on an error, but Ross pitcher Myles Carroll made three straight assists to get out of trouble. Carroll threw a complete game for Ross (12-9), getting through eight innings with 107 pitches. His sacrifice fly tied the game in the seventh. The Tornadoes scored eight runs in the sixth inning. Caiden Wilson singled, doubled and drove in four runs to lead the Truckers (15-7, 8-2 SBC Lake). Wesley Shupe and Kaedyn Warner each had two hits and scored two runs. Johnny Bremyer hit a grand slam for the Tornadoes (5-13, 1-7). LP: Abernathy. 2B: (PC) Armendariz; (N) Hagemann TRACK & FIELD Towns sets SBC record in 3200 HURON — Huron's Rylie Towns set a Sandusky Bay Conference meet record in the girls 3200-meter run late Tuesday, winning in 10:54.10. Huron's Sage Edgerly-Bork won the boys 3200 in 9:33.70. He became the first male in SBC history to win the 3200 four consecutive years. A handful of finals took place and the bulk of the first night of the meet at Huron included Bay and River division prelims. The Tigers' girls 4x800 relay of Laney Schlessman, Claire Putman, Andrea Lesnak and Towns won in 9:38.60. Huron's boys won the 4x800. Jason Nims, Carter Brennan, Peter Cencer and Sage Edgerly-Bork turned in a time of 8:16.90. Margaretta's Kale Bailey won the Bay boys long jump with a leap of 22-6.75. Port Clinton's Michaela Stork won the Bay girls shot put with a 38-5 and Margaretta's Jace Berg won the Bay boys shot put (48-9.5). Danbury's Jordan Ritz won the River girls high jump at 5-2 and the Lakers' Cali Wunder won the discus with a throw of 102-11.
