Vermilion, French sister city continue to rebuild ties

VERMILION — A renewed connection between Vermilion and its sister city in Paimpol, France, is continuing to grow as both communities prepare to take part in events surrounding America's upcoming 250th anniversary. Organizers in Paimpol are planning an exhibition highlighting the historical relationship between France and the U.S. while also showcasing the long-standing connection between Paimpol and Vermilion. The exhibition has received recognition through the Freedom 250 program coordinated by the U.S. Embassy in France, placing it among initiatives celebrating 250 years of shared history between the two nations. The sister city relationship between Vermilion and Paimpol was formally established in 1992 before fading in the early 2000s. Efforts to rebuild the partnership began again in 2023 through renewed outreach and the formation of a new committee in France. A renewed partnership The Comité de jumelage Paimpol — Vermilion, the organization responsible for maintaining the partnership, has continued working to strengthen ties between the two communities through cultural and educational exchanges. The effort is being led by committee president Christian Gabriel alongside roughly 20 active members working to rebuild the relationship and create new opportunities for collaboration between the communities. According to Gabriel, the mission behind the partnership remains simple. "Our sole concern is friendship between people, knowledge and the sharing of culture," Gabriel said. The upcoming exhibition is expected to be hosted in Paimpol and the surrounding communities. Organizers plan to highlight topics ranging from the American Revolution and the historical alliance between France and the U.S. to World War II and the liberation of French communities by American forces. For Gabriel, that history also carries a personal connection. His family's relationship with the U.S. dates back to World War II when an American soldier was housed by his grandparents in Belgium. Organizers say the friendship continued across generations and helped shape Gabriel's appreciation for cultural exchange and international relationships. The renewed partnership between Vermilion and Paimpol has already included outreach efforts, cultural events and educational connections involving Firelands High School. The sister city relationship was originally inspired by Vermilion resident Theodore Wakefield, who helped establish exchanges between the two communities more than three decades ago. Organizers in France said they hope the renewed effort will continue building connections between residents in both communities ahead of America's 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.
