PREP ROUNDUP: Wikel pitches SMCC to key win at Hopewell

BASCOM — Cayden Wikel struck out 10 to lead St. Mary Central Catholic to a 2-1 Sandusky Bay Conference River Division baseball win at Hopewell-Loudon on Tuesday. Wikel allowed only four hits and threw just 99 pitches while going the distance to keep the Panthers' SBC River Division title hopes alive. SMCC improved to 13-5 overall and 10-2 in the River. The Panthers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to give Wikel just enough offensive support. Cullen Dillard singled with one out in the fourth and scored on Adam Burch's two-out single to give SMCC a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Benny Byington led off with a single and went to third on Blake Finneran's one-out single. Byington, who had two hits in the game, scored the Panthers' second run on an error. Cassidy Lane struck out 11 batters in 4 1/3 innings to lead the Polar Bears (16-5) past the Green Bears (4-13) in the area's only postseason game Tuesday. Isla Palomo had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three for Margaretta, which scored 10 runs in the first inning. Tessa Lane added two doubles, two runs and two RBI for the top-seeded Polar Bears, who face second-seeded Lakota in a district semifinal next Tuesday in Clyde. Bellevue has 77 points while Perkins is second with 52. Columbian (46), Sandusky (35), Norwalk (35) and Clyde (25) follow. On the boys side, Perkins leads the way with 86 points while Bellevue is second with 60, followed by Sandusky (47), Norwalk (32), Columbian (31) and Clyde (14). Perkins' Gabriella Schirg won the girls shot put with a top throw of 39 feet, 7.5 inches while Bellevue's Caden Cramer claimed the boys' shot put with a throw of 46-7.50. Perkins swept the discus finals. Danny Buga set an SBC, school and stadium record with a top throw of 189-4 while Austin Bilger took the girls title with a toss of 127-0. Sandusky freshman Louis Johnson won the boys high jump by clearing 6-2. On the girls side, Kaitlyn Turinsky was victorious with a jump of 5-3. Bellevue took home wins in the pole vault. Jeremiah Tuttamore cleared 14-0 for the boys win while Lilly Sosa went over at 11-0 for the girls title. In the long jump, Perkins' Paul Keys won the boys with a SBC record of 22-11.75. Bellevue's Natalie Littlejohn won the girls with a top mark of 17-3.50. There were a handful of running events that were finals. In the 3200, Perkins' Joel Smelcer crossed the line in 9:24.13, winning by more than a minute. For the girls, Bellevue's Reese Meacham won in 11:56.98. Perkins' quartet of Blake Witter, Joel Smelcer, Nicholas Coiffard and Rey Dante won the 4x800 in 8:20.04. Norwalk's quartet of Xavia Immel, Olive Leavitt, Allison Konik and Saige Konik won in 9:54.39. In prelims action, Sandusky's Daviyon Jackson had the top time in the 100 (11.08) and third-best in the 200 (23.18). Clyde's Dekin Crockett has the No. 2 time in the 100 (11.20), best time in the 200 (22.66) and best time in the 300 hurdles (40.28) while Bellevue's Owen Hancock had the top time in the 400 (51.56). Bellevue's Amerie Wagner was fasted in the 100 (12.51) and 200 (25.74) while Clyde's Gabby Griffin was second-best in both (12.94 in 100, 26.82 in 200). Sandusky's Taliyah Farris had the top prelim mark in the 100 hurdles (15.75) and second-best in the 300 hurdles (47.98). FLAG FOOTBALL Sandusky loses 28-20 at regional AKRON — Sandusky jumped out to a 14-0 lead before falling 28-20 to Nordonia in the first round of the Cleveland Browns regional Monday at InfoCision Stadium. Brooklyn Long connected with Dayzha Laye for a 10-yard touchdown pass to get the Blue Streaks on the board first. After Ma'Liyah Reed intercepted a Nordonia pass, Long found Zaria Nava for a touchdown. Nordonia, the No. 2 seed in the 16-team regional, scored on its next possession to pull within 14-7 and, after making an interception, scored to make it 14-13. After stopping Sandusky on downs, Nordonia scored to take a 21-14 halftime lead. A Long-to-Reed touchdown pass pulled the 15th-seeded Streaks to within 21-20 late in the game. The 2-point try failed. Maekhiya Rameau intercepted a Nordonia pass, but Sandusky was stopped on fourth down before Nordonia scored again. Sandusky finished its first season of flag football with a 9-2 record.
