Play ball: Popular youth league back

PERKINS TWP. — It was more than an A-OK night for some T-ball. Last week, on Monday, May 4, a new season kicked off for some of the youngest participants involved in the Firelands Health Youth Baseball League at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky. Children took the field to: • Learn fundamentals of baseball • Play with teammates, turning into friends • Run around while outside • Get involved with a community activity as their parents and families rooted them for two hours Now in its 10th year, the Perkins Township-operated league continues to maintain a stellar reputation, officials said. About 350 children — ranging in age between 2 and 12, spread out among 28 different teams — signed up to play this year, making it the area's most popular youth league for baseball. It's a similar number to the overall turnout in recent years. The older kids face pitchers from coaches or their playing contemporaries. "This is all about the kids, giving them an opportunity to exercise with wellness involved," said Dru Meredith, vice president of operations/marketing and strategic planning with Firelands Health. "We are happy to give kids an opportunity to play in this league on those beautiful fields while participating in America's pastime." Officials also appreciate how children can play on these fields even in wet conditions. This tech-friendly turf allows for fast drainage and safer play as compared to traditional fields with grass and dirt. It's truly a victory for all involved, said Brittany Henley, the township's public service coordinator who oversees this league. "We aim to keep this a league where every child has fun and learns the fundamentals of baseball," Henley said. "The Perkins Township trustees are committed to providing services for our youth that help support healthy lifestyles," she added. "Our youth baseball program helps children stay active and healthy. With the continued support from Firelands Health, we are able to provide this league for all local children. The deal In 2022, township trustees signed a five-year deal with Sports Force Parks so kids enrolled in Perkins' area youth baseball league can play there through, at least, 2026. The contract calls for Perkins to spend $35,000 a year through 2026, which ensures exclusive playing rights at Sports Force Parks on certain nights. These funds — $175,000 over the contract's life — come from the township's recreation fund, which will get replenished, in full, through registration and sponsorship fees. "Perkins Township is greatly appreciative of the relationship we have with Sports Force Parks and look forward to many more years of baseball at their top-notch facilities," said Brad Link, the township's public works director who helps supervise league play. Officials gave all indications they want to extend this deal so children in this league can continue playing at Sports Force for many more years.
