High waters

SANDUSKY — Monday's heavy rains in the Sandusky area provided a reminder that flooding remains a threat in the region so long as Lake Erie remains high.Tim Jonovich, director of the Erie County Emergency Management Agency, said there were reports on flooding all along the lake coast, but said rivers in the county remained too low to cause flooding issues in the county's interior.Water flooded Meigs Street Pier at Battery Park in downtown Sandusky Monday and also covered Dutch Lane and streets accessing boathouses along the bay. "We did have a fair amount of rain," Jonovich said.But he said the bigger threat lately is when a strong wind blows the lake toward shore, and he said there wasn't much of a wind problem Monday.Last weekend, high winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue a lake shore flood watch from Friday night to Saturday night, Jonovich said.He said flooding and erosion isn't just a problem on the mainland."We're noticing it at Kelleys Island also," he said.
