PREP ROUNDUP: Clyde, Margaretta inch closer to SBC softball titles

CLYDE — The Clyde softball team moved one step closer to a Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division title with a 10-0 five-inning run-rule win over Sandusky on Saturday. The Fliers (12-8, 8-1 SBC Lake) can clinch the outright title Monday when they travel to Sandusky. Ariah Farrar led Clyde with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored while Mya Stiefel had two singles, a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Madison Myers allowed just two hits while striking out five in the circle. Izabell Sartor and Laia Prentice each singled for the Blue Streaks (9-7, 3-4). Lane also pitched a no-hitter in the circle for Margaretta (15-5, 8-1 SBC Bay), walking one and striking out 13. Lane added two singles, finishing with three runs batted in and four runs scored while Hastings also had two singles and three RBI. Olson drove in three runs. Tessa Lane doubled and had two RBI for the Polar Bears, who can clinch a share of the league title Wednesday at Huron. Vermilion fell to 4-16, 0-8. Allison Hillman and Kyleigh Gillman each singled for Huron (9-6), but the Tigers took advantage of seven walks, four hit batters and two errors. Reece Hotz tallied two runs batted in for Huron while Lucy Hinners, Adelyn VanSickle, and Hillman each scored twice. Madison Holeman picked up the win, allowing just one earned run in the circle. The Redskins (11-13) led 5-1 after one inning, but H-L got back in the game with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Jae Mazur tallied three singles and a run scored for Port Clinton while Alexis Miller had two singles, two runs and a run batted in. Marissa Frohne became just the second pitcher in program history with at least 200 strikeouts in the season after nine more strikeouts against the Chieftains. Port Clinton (5-14) trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, but a bases-loaded walk to Liam Johnson cut the deficit to one run. Then, a ball hit by Derek Abernathy allowed two runs to score for the win. Beckett Mizener doubled and scored a run for the Redskins. Abernathy picked up the win, allowing two earned runs. Ethan Smiley had a double and two runs scored for the Eagles (11-7) while Colt Clark tallied two singles. Smiley struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings on the mound for Monroeville. Norwalk (14-6, 7-2 SBC Lake) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one inning and added five more runs in the second inning. Carter Harp had a big day for the Truckers. At the plate, he had a single, double, home run, four runs batted in and three runs scored. On the mound, he gave up one earned run while striking out five. Wesley Shupe doubled, drove in two and scored three times while Canyon Craig singled and had three RBI. Drake Yohe had a double and a run scored for the Fliers (5-11, 2-6). Zach Gray singled, doubled and scored a run for Margaretta (15-5) while Emmett Leibengood singled and scored three runs. Hunter Grahl, Memphis McKenzie and Carter Kelley each singled and scored twice. Kelley got the win on the mound, going four innings without allowing an earned run. Fries finished with three runs batted in for St. Paul (15-2, 10-1 FC). Gabe Snyder (triple) and Izaac Snyder (double) each scored and drove in a run. Snyder pitched the first four innings to pick up the win. He allowed an unearned run while striking out eight. Nate Griffin tossed three scoreless innings to seal the win. Fries TENNIS Clyde wins home Invite CLYDE — The Fliers won four of the five brackets at its home Clyde Invitational. Clyde finished with 47 points while Springfield finished second with 38 points. Perkins was third with 16 points. For the Fliers, Aric Kauble won the title at first singles, beating Fremont St. Joseph's Max Yu (10-0) and Springfield's Zach White (10-4). Connor Eastby was champion at second singles, knocking off Perkins' Aaron Benkirane (10-5) and Springfield's Micah Young (10-6). The duo of Chase Castle and Oscar Webb won at first doubles, defeating SJCC's Keira Pan and Marko Maliavsky (10-0) and Springfield's Fahed Yehya and Dylan Scheuder (10-0). At second doubles, Cole Sengstock and Trenton Brown topped Perkins' Anders VanNess and Logan Cooley (10-0) and Springfield's Xander Yeager and Noah Hernendez (10-1). Alex Barrett was runner-up at third singles for the Fliers. He topped Perkins' Jaden Lyons (10-8) before a loss to Springfield's Ryan Sharp (10-5).
