Rolland Nelson Starr

MARCO ISLAND, FLA. — Rolland Nelson Starr, formerly of Huron, passed away peacefully at home in Marco Island, Friday, May 3, 2019.A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he loved his family and friends and encouraged everyone to visit as much as possible.Nelson enjoyed living near the water sitting on his lanai, sipping scotch, while observing all the wildlife the John Stevens River had to offer. Throughout his life, he was an avid pool player and golfer. He played 18 holes until he was well into his 90s.Growing up in Huron, he took over the family fox farm at 18 years of age and decided to start breeding mink as he saw a change in fashion and popularity shift from fox to mink. He bred mink for over 40 years and taught himself animal husbandry developing unique and different colors of mink pelts that he was extremely proud of and won awards for.Nelson was also incredibly astute in his knowledge and involvement in the stock market and traded daily until he was almost 100 years old. In addition, he earned his pilot's license flying his own plane for many years and purchased and captained his last boat at the age of 98.Nelson was a longtime member of Plum Brook Country Club and Huron Yacht Club while in Huron and Lely Golf and Tennis Club in Naples, Fla.He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Kay in 2004; and son, Rolland Nelson Starr Jr. in 1997.Nelson is survived by children, Penelope Starr of Miami, Fla., Lisa Barnhart (Donald) of Huron; grandchildren, Stacey Landoll (Stephen) of Dublin, Ohio, Robin Kaufman of Brooklyn, N.Y., Brooke Barnhart of Huron, and Dylan Goff of Huron.
