75 years ago, 1944: American land-based bombers, in their deepest penetration of Japanese waters from the south, raided Guam, one-time American base 1,500 miles below Tokyo. Nine Liberators participated in the attack on Guam, which lies at the southern end of the Marinas Islands.50 years ago, 1969: Sirhan B. Sirhan, after waiting 11 hours and 45 minutes, sat quietly while the verdict to his sentencing trial was read. Having been found guilty of murder in the first degree, the jury fixed the pentalty as death. Upon leaving the courthouse Sirhan comforted his lawyers saying, "Even Jesus Christ could not have saved me."25 years ago, 1994: Firefighters from 18 area fire departments battled flames for more than eight hours at the Ohio Pallet Company in Townsend Township. The facility caught fire about 2:30 Sunday afternoon and heavy winds spread flames across the Erie-Sandusky county line into Margaretta Twp. The fire was not brought under control until nearly 8 p.m.10 years ago, 2009: The Homestead restaurant and the Rathskeller basement bar are open again after an absence of several years. The 19th-century Milan home dates back to 1883. It has been a restaurant since the mid-1950s, run for years by the Berry Family. The new restaurant will feature an upscale menu with a Friday prime rib special.
