Rise up by lifting others

Loneliness isn't always obvious. Sometimes it sits quietly, waiting for someone to notice. The busiest room in any building can still be the loneliest place for one person. Being surrounded by people doesn't mean you belong. Invisibility isn't a superpower: It's a silent struggle. Everyone you see alone is a chance to lead. Leadership isn't always standing in front. Sometimes it's just sitting beside. It takes no talent to include someone — just awareness and a little compassion. A seat at the table can change a day. An invitation can change a life. Since retiring from full-time teaching, I've spoken to more than 100 schools, teams and organizations. And yet, there's one place I still dread walking into: the cafeteria. Sounds crazy, right? But here's why. Without fail, I'll see someone sitting alone. No conversation. No laughter. Just a tray of food and a heavy silence. It's a heartbreaker. You notice them in the halls, in classrooms and at assemblies, too. Like a shadow, they follow the group close enough to be noticed, but never truly included. Not part of the conversation. Not invited in. Just there. Overlooked. Now imagine living like that every single day. No one to sit with. No one to stand with. No one to walk beside. Just you — on the outside, looking in. And you can't help but ask: Why? Because they don't fit the mold? Because they don't say the "right" things? Because they don't move in the right circles? So, what can we do about it? We get up, move across the room and make that lonely person feel included. Sometimes leadership is that simple. As American orator Robert Ingersoll said, "We rise by lifting others." We understand that leadership isn't always about standing in front. Sometimes it's as simple as sitting beside. Inclusion is leadership in its simplest form. See it. Step in. Sit down. Include more. Because that shadow is alone, waiting to be seen.
