SMCC wins, sets up Calvert showdown

NORTHWOOD — Toby Gibson threw five perfect innings to lead St. Mary Central Catholic to a 7-1 Sandusky Bay Conference River Division baseball win over Northwood on Wednesday. Gibson struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He threw 44 pitches and 35 strikes. Cullen Dillard finished off the game with two innings of one-hit relief. Sam Lawrence had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run for the Panthers, who improved to 10-4 overall and 8-1 in the River. Blake Finneran doubled and scored twice for SMCC. Northwood dropped to 2-14, 0-9. The Panthers play at Cardinal Stritch on Thursday before a huge River matchup Friday at Tiffin Calvert.
