Report: Man solicited boy, 15, for sex

PORT CLINTON — A grand jury recently indicted a Fremont man accused of propositioning a Port Clinton teen for sex.Jared Dayringer, 32, of the first block of Morrison St., was charged with evidence tampering and two counts of importuning, all felonies. According to the indictment, the alleged offense occurred on Jan. 5 and involved the use of social media."The allegations are that he solicited a 15-year-old boy who lived in Port Clinton to engage in sexual activity," Ottawa County prosecutor James VanEerten said. "When he learned the police were involved he tried to delete his Facebook account on his phone."Fremont police were the initial investigator because Dayringer lives in Fremont. But detectives soon discovered the messages were sent in Lucas County. The case was then turned over to Ottawa County since they could claim jurisdiction through the victim, who received the messages in Port Clinton."Fremont police investigated it almost immediately after it transpired," VanEerten said. "But there were concerns on the venue. It took a somewhat arduous route to Ottawa County."Authorities learned of the allegations after a person reported a Facebook post, which accused Dayringer of sending messages of a sexual nature to the boy who didn't know him, according to Fremont police. "The messages tried to get the boy to meet up for sex and to do drugs," Fremont Detective Clay Holskey said. "He wasn't alone when he got the messages and showed them to an adult friend."The friend took a photo of Dayringer's account and made a post saying he was trying to have sex with a teenager. After it was realized Fremont didn't have jurisdiction, Port Clinton police finished the investigation and Dayringer was indicted Thursday.No court dates have been set in the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court, but there was a warrant out for his arrest.
