Restaurant arson case set for trial

PORT CLINTON — A man facing arson charges in connection to a Lakeside business burning down will go to trial this week. Elyria resident Bradley Corbin, 32, was indicted in May 2016 on charges of aggravated arson, arson and insurance fraud, according to court records.Corbin is accused of starting a fire in the basement of his restaurant, Sloopy's Sports Cafe, which burned down in November 2015, according to a May 2016 release from the Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office. He pleaded not guilty during an arraignment last year. "The state fire Marshall's office coordinated with investigators of the insurance carriers, as well as local fire authorities, culminating in the charges presented to the grand jury," said Mark Mulligan, Ottawa County's former prosecutor who indicted Corbin. The Ohio Attorney General's Office took over as the special prosecutor for this case following Mulligan's failed bid for re-election last fall. After being delayed several times, Corbin's trial is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court. The court scheduled out four days for a jury to hear the case.As of Monday, at least 15 people had been subpoenaed, according to court records.Check back at sanduskyregister.com this week for a follow-up article on the trial.
