SBC swim: Perkins boys, PC girls win Lake titles, Oak Harbor boys and girls take Bay

OAK HARBOR — The host Rockets swept the Bay Division Saturday at the Sandusky Bay Conference championships, while the Perkins boys and Port Clinton girls led the Lake Division.Oak Harbor's girls finished with 207 points ahead of runner-up Margaretta with 142, while Huron was third (110.5), Tiffin Calvert fourth (84), Willard fifth (58), St. Mary Central Catholic sixth (36.5), St. Joseph seventh (33) and Gibsonburg eighth (18).On the boys side, the Rockets finished with 205 points to lead the way, while Huron was second (153), Margaretta third (116), Willard fourth (101), SMCC fifth (85) and Calvert sixth (10).In the Lake Division, the Perkins boys took the top spot with 235 points, while Port Clinton was second (131.5), Tiffin Columbian third (125), Sandusky fourth (98), Vermilion fifth (62) and Norwalk sixth (23.5).The Redskins finished first on the girls side with 202 points, while Sandusky was second (168), Perkins third (164), Norwalk fourth (122) and Columbian fifth (31).[gallery]OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCESPerkins' Charlie Clark won the 500 freestyle, setting a new SBC record and Oak Harbor pool record, and added three more firsts en route to being named Lake Division boys Outstanding Performer. Also for the Pirates, Katie Visci earned the honor on the girls side, while Huron's Marc Dieter was the Bay Division boys Outstanding Performer and Tiffin Calvert's Taylor Harris earned the honor for the Bay Division girls.Clark finished the 500 with a time of 4 minutes, 35.46 seconds, to break his own Oak Harbor pool record of 4:41.46, set at the sectional meet last season, as well as Pirate standout Dan Wohl's SBC record (4:46.51) from 2001.Clark had the opportunity to meet Wohl over Christmas Break and said it was nice to get to know the swimmer whose records he's been breaking."He set some really good records and he has a lot more, too," Clark said.Perkins coach Brian Cassidy said Clark has been working hard this season to compete at a high level."He has a chance to break those records and he goes after them," Cassidy said. "He doesn't hit the pause button, ever, for any meet. He always wants to push himself to the highest, and he keeps doing that in practice everyday and then you see the results in the meets. We're really proud of him. He had a great day today."Clark also won the 200 freestyle (1:44.80) and teamed up with Matthew Schaeffer, Collin Singler and Thomas Steinmetz to win the 200 medley relay (1:45.65) and with Singler, Schaeffer and AC Blue to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.86)."I was pretty happy with (my swims) today," Clark said. "The 200 was kind of where I wanted to be at, and the 500 I was really happy with. I was only about .5 slower than my best ever time, so I'm really happy to be at that time at this point in the season without a tech suit on or anything."Visci had a pair of firsts to earn the Lake Division honor, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:09.77) and 200 IM (2:17.54). She also teamed up with Lily Gross, Katie Porter and Emma Lynch to finish second in the 200 medley relay, and with Lynch, Gross and Ella Crabtree to take third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:10.00)."I'm really glad I won that," Visci said of the Outstanding Performer award. "I've been thinking about it since I was a freshman, like would I ever get it, but there were always older swimmers who were really fast and then this year, it just all fell into place. They weren't the times I was exactly hoping for, but they were still good, so I can't be that mad."Dieter won the 100 backstroke (59.47), finished second in the 200 IM (2:07.78) and had a pair of third-place relay finishes to lead the Bay Division. He teamed up with Jay Lesnett, Max Hardy and Rowan Roshong to take third in the 200 medley relay (1:47.61) and with Hardy, Roshong and Weston Brown, took third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.66)."It's really prestigious with Charlie and Katie and everyone," Dieter said of earning Outstanding Performer. "They're amazing swimmers, and I'm honored to be named among them."For the Bay Division girls, Harris won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.77) and 100 butterfly (1:00.13), and was part of the second-place 400 freestyle relay team (4:08.04) and third-place 200 medley relay team (2:09.78).ROCKETS ROCKElayna Krupp led the Oak Harbor girls with four first-place finishes, while Erin Druyor added three.The duo teamed up with Emily Haar and Amelia Mizelle to win the 200 medley relay (1:56.41), while Krupp added individual firsts in the 50 (24.53) and 100 (55.03) freestyle events.Krupp and Druyor also teamed up with Haar and Kennedy Blunt to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:56.01), while Druyor won the 100 backstroke (1:05.07).Kennedy Blunt, Abby Beehler, Mizelle and Bailey Blunt added a first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.58)."The girls swam really well," Oak Harbor coach Andrea Sorg said. "We have a lot of depth, both boys and girls, so in some cases our third swimmers were able to score in individual events. And our relays did pretty well."On the boys side, Troy Metcalf led the way with a trio of firsts. He teamed up with Thomas Chovanec, Caleb Heintz and Kobe Fletcher to win the 200 medley relay (1:46.44), and with Chovanec, Caleb Heintz and Griffin Heintz won the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.07).Metcalf also took first in the 50 freestyle (22.78), while Caleb Heintz won the 200 freestyle (1:59.93)."We had a lot of fast swims today," Sorg said of the boys. "We had some that were a little lackluster, too, but everyone's kind of holding steady or dropping time from where they've been."REDSKINS ROLLBryanna Barr and Gabbi Porter led the P.C. girls with three first-place finishes each. The duo teamed up with Elena Kessler and Analisa Snyder to win the 200 medley relay (2:00.77) and 200 freestyle relay (1:44.05), while Barr won the 500 freestyle (5:34.29) and Porter took first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.39)."I didn't know the girls would perform this well today, or the boys for that matter," P.C. coach Danny Diaz said. "It's exciting — the league has become so competitive — anytime you can finish in the top in the league, it's something to be proud about.I want to say my 'B' kids, not to take away from my 'A' kids, but those kids really stepped up today. They came to compete and sometimes those are the kids that feel that they're not important, but they really are, especially when it comes to something like this."Noah Shaw had the lone first for the P.C. boys, winning the 100 backstroke in 1:01.54."The boys, they're young," Diaz said. "It's exciting — Perkins is very strong on the boys side and so is Oak Harbor, so to finish second, to me, that's an accomplishment in its own, so I'm extremely excited to see what the future brings for them."AROUND THE LAKEAlong with Clark and Visci leading the Pirate swimmers, Collin Singler added a pair of firsts on the boys side, while the girls had a diving first on Thursday and Lily Gross added a title on Saturday.Singler took first in the 200 IM (2:03.11) and 100 butterfly (55.40), while Gross won the 100 backstroke (1:06.51) and Josie Andres won the diving competition Thursday with a score of 324.90."They all swam really fast," Cassidy said of his Pirates. "It was a great meet all around — there were great swims from pretty much all of our swimmers."Tia Knoll led the Sandusky girls to a runner-up finish with three first-place finishes. Knoll won the 200 freestyle (2:00.14), 100 freestyle (54.94) and teamed up with Baylie Tieche, McKenna Ransom and Abigale Lazzara to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:53.79).For the Blue Streak boys, Tyler Franklin won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.48).Also in the Lake Division, Vermilion's Jack Rini won the boys 50 (22.95) and 100 (50.42) freestyle events, while Norwalk's Anna Little was first in the girls 50 freestyle (25.61).AROUND THE BAYNicholas Bauer led the fourth-place Willard boys with a trio of first-place finishes. Individually, he won the 100 butterfly (56.35) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.72). Bauer also teamed up with Jordan Luna, Blake Smith and Blake Thompson to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.64).For the Margaretta girls, Lily Green won the 200 freestyle (2:11.32), while Josie Stark took first in the 200 IM (2:25.45). Trenton Miller was first in the 100 freestyle (53.59) for the Polar Bear Boys.Huron had a pair of firsts Thursday, as Emma Kerro, a UNLV signee, won the girls diving competition (436), while Joseph Lenczyk won the boys competition (315.15). On Saturday, Max Hardy added a first for the Tiger boys in the 500 freestyle (5:18.06)."I asked the boys and the girls this morning to take a chance," Huron coach Randy Lehrer said.
