Edison, Margaretta top seeds in softball draw

Two area softball teams from the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division will start tournament play as No. 1 seeds. The statewide softball tournament draw took place Sunday, with 13 area teams slotting into seven different district sites in five divisions. Edison is the top seed in the Division V Clyde district, which features eight teams. The Chargers (12-4) will face Bay rival Port Clinton (11-9) in a tournament opener May 13 in Milan Township. The Redskins are the No. 6 seed. The two teams played a regular-season game Monday at Edison. The Chargers edged PC 5-4 on April 20. The Edison-PC winner will meet the winner of the matchup between third-seeded Eastwood (15-4) and eighth-seeded Fostoria (0-12) in a district semifinal May 20 in Clyde. Margaretta, which is 13-4 overall and tied with Edison atop the SBC Bay at 6-1, is the top seed in the Division VI Clyde district and hosts No. 7 seed Ottawa Hills on May 12. The two teams will meet this Thursday at the home of the Green Bears in suburban Toledo. A win in its first game would put Margaretta into a district semifinal against second-seeded Lakota on May 19 in Clyde. In Division III, Norwalk (9-9) is a No. 5 seed in the Oregon Clay district. The Truckers entered Monday on a five-game winning streak and will visit third-seeded Lexington (10-9) in a tournament opener at 5 p.m. May 14. The winner of that game will advance to a district semifinal at 6 p.m. May 21 against either No. 6 seed Sandusky (7-6) or No. 2 seed Ontario (17-5). In Division IV, fourth-seeded Bellevue (8-9) hosts fifth-seeded Perkins (7-10) in a tournament opener May 13. Bellevue swept Perkins in the regular season by a combined score of 24-8. Third-seeded Clyde (8-8) will face sixth-seeded Galion (6-16) in another opener. The winner will play the Bellevue-Perkins winner May 19 at Margaretta. Bryan (14-0) is the district's top seed and the district championship will be played May 22 at Sylvania Northview. The area's other Division IV team — Vermilion — is the 7 seed in the Margaretta district. The Sailors (3-14) face second-seeded Clear Fork (17-5) in a tournament opener May 13 in Bellville. The winner draws top-seeded Oak Harbor in a district semifinal May 19. Huron (7-6) is the No. 4 seed in the Division V Napoleon district and opens at home against fifth-seeded Crestview (8-5) on May 13. The winner likely will face second-seeded Elmwood in a district semifinal May 19 in Clyde. Three area teams will play in the Division VII Oak Harbor district. Third-seeded Monroeville (11-5) will open tournament play by hosting seventh-seeded Crestline (3-10) on May 15. A win by the Eagles could set up a third meeting against St. Paul (11-7), the No. 2 seed that hosts fourth-seeded Seneca East (5-8) on May 15. Last season, the Eagles defeated the Flyers in a district title game en route to a second straight trip to the state championship game. The two teams met April 28 in Monroeville, with the Eagles claiming the 12-2 win. The second meeting is slated for this Thursday in Norwalk. A tournament matchup would come May 20 in a district semifinal at Buckeye Central High School. St. Mary Central Catholic (5-7) is the No. 4 seed and hosts No. 5 seed Fremont St. Joseph on May 15. The winner will play second-seeded Gibsonburg (10-2) in a district semifinal May 20 at Oak Harbor.
