Local park getting new playground

SANDUSKY — Enhancing a park's playground served as a core issue for Sandusky city commissioners, who supported legislation to update this play space for children and families. During a recent public meeting, the elected officeholders approved a work order to install a new play structure at Central Park near Cameo Pizza. "The city updated the larger playground in Central Park a few years back, and we're excited to now replace the smaller playground that has been in much need of an upgrade," city recreation project coordinator Chris Mehling said. "We look forward to families with young kids being able to use the new equipment." Simply put, the existing equipment at Central Park's smaller playground "is outdated and due for replacement," according to a city statement, adding how, in 2018, Central Park received a major makeover with the larger playground structure, basketball court, shaded picnic area and new sidewalks. Regarding the upcoming task, it comes in at a cost of nearly $60,000. Federal funds, through what's known as the Community Development Block Grant, should cover all project expenses. Each year, the city receives block grant dollars. These funds provide municipalities, like Sandusky's, with monetary resources in hopes of addressing several challenges to develop viable urban communities. It also aims to improve the quality of life for those falling in the low- to medium-income bracket levels. The new equipment includes: • A play structure intended for children between the ages of 2 and 5 • A handicap accessible swing set with a tot seat and an expansion seat • A duo spinner • About 2,600 square feet of engineered wood fiber surfacing • A handicap accessible ramp system and border edging Officials believe installation should start and finish this summer.
