Huron girls win Margaretta invite

CASTALIA — Huron junior Rylie Towns set a meet record in the 3200 meters, helping the Tigers take the team championship at the Margaretta Invitational last Friday night. Huron finished with 139.5 points while Firelands was runner-up with 128 points. Margaretta took third with 69 and Edison was 10th with 19. Towns crossed the line in 11:06.42, breaking the meet record set by Briana Shook in 1999 of 11:12.40. Earlier, Towns teamed with Laney Schlessman, Liz Heidl and Allison Kohlmann to win the 4x800 relay in 10:00.99. The group of Sasha Fry, Allison Kohlmann, Olivia Kohlmann and Kate Ryan won the 4x400 in 4:11.64. Hadley Barkema won the pole vault for the Tigers, clearing 10 feet. "The girls are young and hungry," Huron coach Mike Lemponen said. "We only have two senior sprinters or jumpers and one senior distance athlete. I'm most impressed with the leadership of our upperclassmen and fearlessness of the freshman class in the big moments. They are primed to defend their SBC title and ready for a deep postseason run." Andrea Lesnak was second to Towns in the 3200 in 11:32.28. She won the 1600 in 5:14.06, beating out teammate Claire Putnam, who was second in 5:27.89. Margaretta's Lillian Belak won the 300 hurdles in 47.42 while taking second in the 100 hurdles in 16.77. Kenadie Saylor took down the long jump, with a top mark of 16 feet, 4.5 inches. Putnam was also second in the 800 in 2:29.41, barely finishing ahead of Schlessman, who was third in 2:29.68. Ryan was second in the 200 in 26.69, just behind Midview's Cora Vance, who won in 26.27. Also for Margaretta, Lillian Kimbell (31-09.50) and Jenae Farrell (30-06.25) took second and third in the shot put. Huron's Mya Smith (5-0) and Elli Ness (4-6) took second and third in the high jump while the Tigers' quartet of Avery Bork, Khloe Wagner, Fry and Ryan was third in the 4x100 (52.41). "With the SBC coming up, health is the priority," said Lemponen of the league meet finals May 15. "Then, it's about trying to put that perfect puzzle together to maximize points in each event and live with the results. "We are very much looking forward to defending both girls and boys titles with the opportunity to do it on our home track in the last SBC meet before going into the new league." Firelands won the boys team title with 120 points while Margaretta was runner-up with 88. Huron took third with 76 points and Edison was seventh with 47. Perry McGraw won the 110 hurdles for the Polar Bears in 15.98 while Huron's Hayden Wilson was runner-up in 16.25. Huron's Joe Schaeffer took home victories in the 100 (11.13) and 200 (21.81). In the 100, he beat out Margaretta's Zack Bouy (11.28). Bouy teamed with Kale Bailey, Carter Luzader and Julian Washington to win the 4x200 in 1:30.75. Bouy grouped with Luzader, Bailey and Mason Reinbolt to take victory in the 4x100 in 44.07. "What stood out to me was the energy our team brought from start to finish," Margaretta coach Kasey Haerr said. "Spirits were high and you can tell everyone has really been locking in, believing in what we're doing and buying into what we're hoping to accomplish this season. That kind of mindset is contagious and it's been showing in the way we compete and support one another." One of the most competitive races of the day came in the 3200 where Huron's Sage Edgerly-Bork (9:33.93) beat Margaretta's Cole Zang (9:35.55) for the victory. Zang's mark was a school record for the Polar Bears. Jace Berg had a top throw of 167-10, taking first for the Polar Bears in the discus. He was fourth in the shot put with a 49-4. "The boys continue to amaze me," Haerr said. "When I first started coaching nine years ago, we would have a standout athlete here or there who could do some special things. Now, we have an entire team that has bought into the program and is committed to working hard every day to keep improving." AJ Walters, Bailey, Luzader and Washington took second in the 4x400 in 3:30.13. They finished just ahead of Huron's Ayden Miller, Caleb Staley, Carter Brennan and Schaeffer, who finished in 3:33.73. Ryan Rogers was second in the pole vault for Huron at 12 feet while Walters was third in the 1600 for Margaretta, crossing the line in 4:44.88. Colin Butler finished third in the 300 hurdles for Edison in 42.47. "This next week, with one less dual meet on the schedule, gives us a great opportunity to focus on quality practice, sharpen the details and sit down with the guys to lay out the game plan for what's ahead," Haerr said. Wiechman took home victories in the 1600 (5:18.13) and 3200 (11:33.12). Liberty Center won the team championship with 108.33 points while the Redskins had 106.33. Danbury was fourth with 85 points, Clyde was fifth with 82.83 and St. Mary Central Catholic was eighth with 23. In the 1600, Wiechman finished just ahead of SMCC's Nicolette Hile, who crossed in 5:26.05. In the 3200, Clyde's Marissa Gessner was third in 12:08.46. Hile added a second-place finish in the 800 in 2:28 for the Panthers. Also for the Redskins, Lily Wagner, Audrey Rohrer, Riley Dobbelare and Addisyn Mooney won the 4x100, crossing the line in 52.43. Reigning state champion Michaela Stork won the discus with a top throw of 140-1. Teammate Calleigh Fought was second at 118 feet. Danbury's Taytum Benyak won the shot put with a top mark of 35-06.25. Stork (33-11) and Fought (30-4) were second and third. Clyde's Jolene Brennan won the 400 meter in 1:00.66. Teammate Anabella Zieber took third in 1:03.28. Danbury's Viktoriya Skeans was second in the 100 hurdles in 16.80 while Clyde's Casey Fisher took third in 17.45. Fisher was also third in the 300 hurdles in 49.76. Clyde's 4x200 group of Kyleigh McHugh, Fisher, Zieber and Brennan finished second in a time of 1:51.37. For Clyde, the quartet of Marissa Gessner, Kayla Tischler, Laney Renfro and Brennan took third in the 4x800 in 10:37.93. Also for the Fliers, Ruth Guzman, Renfro, Zieber and Brennan was third in the 4x400 in 4:25.52. Danbury's Jordan Ritz took second in the high jump with a top jump of 4-8 while Zoe Uhnick took second in the long jump at 15-1.50 for the Lakers. Port Clinton's Addisyn Mooney was third in the 100 in 13.27. Lakota won the boys team title with 136 points. Port Clinton was third with 92, Clyde was fifth with 83 and SMCC took eighth with 33.5. For the Redskins, Charlie Simpson set a meet record in the 1600 in 4:31.72, just beating out Ethan Neblock's 2021 best time of 4:31.79. Simpson also won the 800 in 2:03.31. Port Clinton's Brody Bollinger finished second in the 110 hurdles in 15.64, tied for second in the high jump (5-8) and third in the long jump (19-9.50). Dekin Crockett won the 300 hurdles in a time of 39.95 while finishing second in the 100 meter in 11.11, just .05 behind Lakota's King Beard (11.06). Crockett was second in the 200 in 22.91, finishing behind Beard's time of 22.26. Crockett teamed with Dane Aldrich, Mitch Newsome and Ethan Skeels to finish second in the 4x400 in 3:36.24. Clyde's quartet of Bentley Meade, Preston Widman, Skeels and Aldrich took second in the 4x800 in 8:50.62, just ahead of SMCC's Gio Torres-Cortes, Eli Etchill, Jackson Grimm and Ben Jones (9:00.11), who were third. Etchill added a second-place finish in the 3200 meter in 9:56.60. Bollinger, Martez Wilson, Brayden Poole and Christian Miller were third for Port Clinton in the 4x100 in 44.93. Newsome took third for Clyde in the 400 in 52.33 while Gabe Burch added a third for SMCC in the shot with a throw of 45-10.25. St. Paul tallied 101.61 points, taking second behind Triway's 111.5. Monroeville was 10th with 33. The quartet of Jenny Schwan, Frances Donnelly, Kennedie Frazee and Ware won the 4x800 in a time of 11:10.4. Deanna Vazquez won the 400 in 1:02.9 and the 200 in 26.9 for the Flyers. Scarlet Ross added a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles in 53.6 for St. Paul while Ware was second in the 3200 meter in 13:42. Vazquez teamed with Kira Sandor, Brooklyn Cassidy and Aubrie Bogard to take second in the 4x200 in 1:59.8. They finished just ahead of Monroeville's Kara Gerber, Kiahna Smith, Sophia Stieber and Lilly Stein, who crossed the line in 2:00.8. Farris wins twice TOLEDO — Facing bigger competition, Sandusky senior Taliyah Farris took home a pair of wins in the hurdles events at the Nancy Erme Relays at Whitmer High School. She won the 100 hurdles in 15.93, beating out Toledo Whitmer's Sage Hudson (16.05). In the 300, Farris won in a time of 46.88, again topping Hudson's mark of 47.41.
