BENTON-CARROLL-SALEM • Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools' board of education recognized several organizations and achievements at a recent meeting. — Oak Harbor High School Marine Science earned donations from the Oak Harbor Rotary Club and American Legion. Funds will go toward the students' trip to Key West. — Kelli May, student service director, shared a presentation about the student services team's support for students. — Corbin Genson, Taylor Sworden, Caitlyn Pipoly, Hannah Ried and Karys Becerra were recognized as new staff members. EDISON • Alex Davidson was announced as the Berlin Heights Kiwanis' May Student of the Month at Edison High School. Davidson's activities and achievements: soccer (first-team All-Ohio, All-Great Lakes Region Team, District Player of the Year, Conference Player of the Year, firs-team district, first-team conference, captain, senior All-Star Player of the Game and All-Academic SBC). Soccer records broken: goals in a game (eight), goals in a season (60), goals in a career (101), assists in a season (29); football (kicker, third-team All-Ohio, first-team district, first-team conference and All-Academic SBC). Football records broken: highest extra point percentage in a season (100%), most field goals in a career (10, tied), National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award recipient; honor roll and National Honor Society. Davidson plans to attend the University of Findlay for engineering and play soccer. CLYDE-GREEN SPRINGS • Clyde Elementary School hosted a kindergarten information night. The night was a chance for families to learn skills and prepare students entering kindergarten. Parents explored readiness skills and visited stations led by teachers with hands-on ideas to use through the summer. Families were also gifted bags of resources. NORWALK • Norwalk Schools announced recent students of the month from Norwalk Elks #730. — Alex Hamons from South Central High School is the March Student of the Month. Hamons' activities and achievements: 3.9 GPA, National Honor Society, Teen Leadership Corps, Sources of Strength and FFA. He also played varsity for four years in football, wrestling and baseball and earned all-conference academic throughout high school. He enjoys hanging out with friends, golfing and fishing and plans to enter the workforce with Sunrise Cooperative. — Brooke Heyman from Norwalk High School is the April Student of the Month. Heyman's activities and achievements: 4.3 GPA, orchestra and orchestra's leadership team ninth through 12th grade, vice-president 11th grade and president 12th grade. She is on the Firelands Academic Challenge team and was co-captain in 12th grade and was a regular season champion in 11th and 12th grades and a second overall winner in 10th and 12th grades. She is also active in Teen Leadership Corps, National Honor Society where she is president in 12th grade, participated in Ohio Music Education Association Solo & Ensemble for piano solos and string ensembles where she earned the highest possible rating in ninth, 10th and 12th grades. She participates in the high school book club, church band, church bell choir, Impact Leadership and volunteered at the church's Vacation Bible School. She was named to the principal's roll and named a Kiwanis Student of the Month. She enjoys playing piano, reading and writing. She plans to attend Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences to major in creative writing to become a published writer. • Norwalk High School announced three students of the month. — Brynn Prack's activities and achievements: adult indoor sand and volleyball leagues, high school volleyball and Northshore Volleyball Club, coached for Millennium Volleyball, works at Toft Dairy and works as a nanny. She is part of National Honor Society and has been named to the principal's list for all four years of high school. She plans to attend the University of Cincinnati for sports administration and eventually law school. — Brittany Negrete's activities and achievements: student and soon-to-be graduate of EHOVE Career Center's cosmetology program, Skills USA, EFL, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, honor roll, principal's list and Career Tech Student of the Nine Months. She plans to attend BGSU Firelands to study nursing and eventually earn a BSN and become a pediatric nurse practitioner. — Landon Ferkel's activities and achievements: student athlete in soccer and baseball, National Honor Society and Athletic Leadership Team. He earned awards, including Soccer first-team All SBC, first-team all-district and earning an academic letter. He plans to attend Bowling Green State University for nursing then anesthesia. PORT CLINTON • Port Clinton High School's Kai Weit received the Franklin B. Walter Award. The award was presented to Weit from the Ohio Educational Service Center Association. It recognizes outstanding academic achievement. One senior from each Ohio county nominated by an Educational Service Center is eligible for the award. Weit's activities and achievements: historian for the Leadership Council, treasurer of the National Honor Society and Drama Club, secretary for the International Club, a member of the high school band and captain of the Academic Challenge Team. He is also a student-athlete and was a state qualifier and current team captain for the high school tennis team. He plans to attend Boston University to study political science with a pre-law focus. HURON • Woodlands Elementary School's third-grade students completed a project with Chef's Garden. Students have been studying plant life cycles and soil. Chef's Garden donated supplies for the students to grow vegetables. For the past years, Chef's Garden has donated supplies like trays, soil, seeds and vermiculite so students could learn about plant life cycles. NORTH POINT EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER • Norwalk's Ernsthausen stage hosted 45 Huron County students, between fourth and eighths, for an annual spelling bee hosted by North Point Educational Service Center. Participating districts include Bellevue, St. Joseph, Monroeville, Western Reserve, South Central, New London, Bellevue ICS, Norwalk and Monroeville. The top four spellers were Rebecca Russell from Bellevue in fourth, Leland Smithberger from Western Reserve in third, Austin Frey from Bellevue in second and Miles Woodard from Bellevue ICS was the champion. SANDUSKY • Sandusky Schools was awarded by the Ohio School Public Relations Association. The district and its communications department have now secured more than 40 awards from the association since 2021.
