Deep, dark cave tours this weekend

BELLEVUE — Seneca Cavern explorers can experience a unique cave dive this weekend. The first-ever explorers of the caverns went through the maze-like tunnels with only candles or lanterns guiding them, said Denise Bell, owner of Seneca Caverns.Seneca Caverns was discovered in 1872 when two boys, Peter Rutan and Henry Komer went hunting with their dog, Bishop said.With 146 years of individuals traveling through depths of the Earth at Seneca Caverns, a lot of memories and stories have been created.During the hour-long tour, guest will get a true depiction of those memories about the area's history and haunting tales.Participants get the opportunity to wander the caves with a tour guide with only LED headlamps and several lanterns on the ground to illuminate the cavern."People are able to experience the caves in a different light," Bell said. "You'll be able to hear the water dripping and be in silence while seeing different things you normally don't notice with the lights on," Bell said.The tours, 6 p.m. Saturday, require pre-registration – groups of 10 are preferred.A light jacket and closed-toed shoes are recommended as the caverns temperature are chilly with a constant 54 degrees."This will be the final lantern tour of the season, and it's the perfect way to step back in time and step into an adventure," Bell said.Reach the Register at news@sanduskyregister.com.
