PREP ROUNDUP: Sandusky flag football wins two more games

ELYRIA — Sandusky's flag football team finished its first regular season with a 9-1 record after winning two games Friday. The Blue Streaks defeated Cloverleaf 40-13 and fended off Medina 27-20. Sandusky quarterback Brooklyn Long connected with center Zaza Nava — a foreign exchange student from Italy — for the Streaks' first score against Cloverleaf. Journey Newell made a tackle in the end zone to give Sandusky a 9-0 lead before Dayzha Laye made two touchdown catches to make it 21-6. Vivian Johnson followed with a long touchdown run before two touchdown passes from Long to Maekhiya Rameau capped the scoring. Long hooked up with Rameau for a touchdown for the first score against Medina. Johnson added a sack for a safety to make it 9-0 before Long found Rameau on a long touchdown pass at the end of the first half to give Sandusky a 15-0 lead. After Medina scored, Egypt Stockett returned an interception for a touchdown to give the Streaks a 21-6 lead. After a turnover on downs, Maliyah Reed caught a touchdown pass from Long before two late Medina scores. Sandusky now will wait to see if it makes the playoffs. The 11 division winners statewide plus five at-large teams make the playoffs. "The playoff race is extremely tight," Sandusky coach Mitch Sweet said. "Multiple teams from other leagues are 9-1. We have one of the best teams in the state. I have no doubt about that." Midview won the Western Conference's Orange Division, defeating Sandusky on the last play of their game earlier this season. The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals will host regional tournaments in early May. The regional finals are Monday, May 11, with the top four finishers from both regions earning a spot in the state finals Canton on May 16. Sweet has been pleased with his team's improvement throughout the season. "They learned so much throughout the season and got better every day," Sweet said. "The best feeling off the field was watching them walk the halls on Mondays. So many people asked how they played, congratulating them on their plays and wins." TENNIS Clyde 3, MVCD 2 TOLEDO — The Fliers swept the doubles matches en route to a second round Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament win. Clyde improved to 15-1 with the victory. Simpson was timed in 4:31.72, breaking the old record by .07 seconds. PC's Morgan Wiechman won the girls 1600 in 5:18.13 Complete meet results were not complete by press time.
