Blue Streaks ranked in top 5 in first state poll

SANDUSKY — How fitting.Through three weeks of the season, the running exploits of No. 4 Terion Stewart and a tough, stingy defense have been a big reason why Sandusky is 3-0 heading into Week 4. Stewart, a junior, has 720 rushing yards (240 per game average) and 11 touchdowns.Keeping with that numbers theme, the Blue Streaks checked in at No. 4 in Division III in the first Ohio high school football poll of the season.Sandusky has won 17 straight regular-season games and 25 of its last 26 dating back to Week 7 of the 2015 season, with the lone setback coming by a single point (24-23) to Division II Lorain in 2016.The Streaks play at Toledo Rogers (0-3) this Friday. It is the first of three straight road games for Sandusky.Opening the season with three games at Strobel Field, the Blue Streaks have taken care of business. They controlled play and dominated in wins over Port Clinton (48-21) and Huron (35-7), then won a 14-6 slugfest with arch rival Fremont Ross last Friday.Sandusky's defense held the Little Giants' explosive offense to just 189 total yards.Meanwhile, Stewart ran for 225 yards, which included an 89-yard scoring run in the second quarter to get the Streaks on the board."We have to stay focused," Streaks coach Mike Franklin told the Register after the Ross game. "I think at this point last year I don't know if we got a whole lot better during this time in our schedule, so I think it's important we continue to improve so by the time we get into league play we're firing on all cylinders."In 2017, the Streaks opened in the No. 6 spot in the poll, then moved up to No. 5 for four straight weeks before moving up to No. 4 for two, then No. 3 in the final poll as they wrapped up their first 10-0 regular season in 28 years.Following Toledo road trips to Rogers ( Sept. 14) and Bowsher (Sept. 21), Sandusky will open Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division play at Tiffin Columbian on the final Friday of September.St. Paul gets votes in Div. The Flyers started with dominating 37-6 and 42-0 wins over St. Mary Central Catholic and Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic, respectively.
