A second chance in 6 minutes

LAKESIDE-MARBLEHEAD — Gabriel Sidoti has exactly 6 minutes to showcase a decade of perseverance and a lifetime of rebuilding. On May 16, Sidoti — a 33-year-old songwriter and Sandusky native — will travel to Chicago for the opportunity of a lifetime. He will meet with Roc Nation, the powerhouse music label founded by Jay-Z. Sidoti earned the trip after winning the Put the City On competition in Cleveland on April 17. It was an outcome he visualized so strongly that he typed "congratulations" to himself in his phone notes before he even stepped on stage. Now he is meticulously preparing for his moment in front of Rel Carter, Jay-Z's nephew and a senior executive at the label. "I have it down to an absolute science," Sidoti said. "I have a 6-minute record with five songs clipped at 30 seconds each because I understand that the masses' attention span statistically is like the first 6 seconds. I want them to understand that I'm a writer first, and I can write for any genre." The music, the message For Sidoti, the Chicago meeting is about far more than securing a record deal: It represents an opportunity to spread a message of emotional maturity and resilience. His showcase will feature R&B, pop and rap, deliberately moving away from common industry tropes. "The problem with a lot of music nowadays is the focus on negative lifestyles," he said. "I want to represent what a young man should be like. You have to know how you are going to handle a tough time and a struggle. That's what I represent." One of the tracks he plans to perform, "The Dark Has Come and Gone," details his personal journey of transformation. It is a narrative that began in Sandusky and took him through a residential care academy in Utah where he first used music as therapy to cope with his emotions. He eventually moved to Los Angeles at 18 with no money and a dream of songwriting. While he spent years making connections in the industry between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Sidoti openly acknowledges getting caught up in the wrong elements of a Hollywood lifestyle. He dealt with substance abuse and run-ins with the law. "It takes darkness to really realize your light," said Sidoti, reflecting on his past without making excuses. A return to his roots Recognizing that he needed a profound change, Sidoti returned to Ohio to rebuild his life with integrity. The shift was deeply tied to his evolving responsibilities and his commitment to his two sons. "I had to come back home and root myself," he said. "I had to be the dad that I know that I am and stop running from myself." Today, fatherhood and community are his primary driving forces. Writing from his current base in Lakeside-Marblehead, Sidoti views his music not just as a career but as a critical coping mechanism that he wants to share with the next generation. He hopes to build a platform in the area to teach local youth how to process their emotions through songwriting rather than turning to negative outlets. His advice to young kids in Sandusky and elsewhere who might have dreams that seem impossible is simple and direct. "Don't take shortcuts. Do the work and keep your family close." Beyond music, Sidoti is currently focusing on community outreach and plans to organize fundraisers to support survivors of domestic violence. He views these efforts as a way to atone for his own past actions and provide resources for those who have experienced similar trauma. He is collaborating on these efforts with his cousin, Lisa Sidoti, owner and founder of TheSkinLab Co., who plans to provide services to the shelter alongside his fundraising. For Lisa, the community work is just one reflection of the changes she has seen in him. "His past is part of his story, but it's not who he is anymore," Lisa said. "Music has been a powerful outlet to express himself and move forward. The man I see today is focused on growth, purpose and a better future." Regardless of the outcome in Chicago, Sidoti's vision for his future is firmly planted in Ohio. While he hopes to eventually tour Europe, one of his greatest goals is to perform a homecoming show at a restored Sandusky State Theatre. It would be a full-circle moment for a man who, like the theater, is being rebuilt for a second act. "God doesn't talk like us. He talks in signs, he talks in symbols, he talks in the wind," Sidoti said. "You have to be open to the signs. If you live in a path of integrity, dreams become a reality."
