WATCH: Huron Schools to celebrate McCormick's 75th anniversary

SANDUSKY — An historic Huron building will celebrate its longevity Aug. 4 Huron Schools district treasurer Dawn Jacobs, McCormick junior high school principal Chad Carter and volunteer Jerod Blakely appeared on "Between the Lines," the Register's public affairs program, to talk about the McCormick Junior High School's "Diamond Jubilee" to celebrate its 75th anniversary.The program is available for demand viewing at sanduskyregister.com.At the time it was built in 1943, McCormick was the first fully-poured concrete building in Ohio. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and was originally the only building for the district, housing students from kindergarten through high school. It also served as the home of the Huron Playhouse until its recent closure.Event organizers invited classes from 1943 to 1955 with about three graduates from the original class will likely show up, Carter said.Activities, which go from 3-7 p.m., will include tours of the historic building, a 50/50 raffle, brick fundraiser, live music, a car show and more. Proceeds from the brick fundraiser will go toward ongoing renovations to the school. Each brick costs $125.During the tours, people can wander through the building and meet teachers who previously taught in specific classrooms."McCormick has been a centerpiece of Huron Schools for many years, so we wanted to keep those memories and keep that going and raise money for the building and invite everyone out," Blakely said.Added Carter: "I think it brings a lot of pride and tradition to the community.
