Grand jury indicts Snapchat rape suspect

PORT CLINTON — An Ottawa County grand jury indicted a Danbury Township man accused of raping a 20-year-old woman. James Dennis Allen, 77, was indicted on two felony counts each of rape and sexual battery, according to the Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office. The alleged rape, which occurred on Aug. 8, was recorded on Snapchat, a social media application for mobile phones that allows its users to share videos with their friends. After viewing the video, a friend of the alleged victim alerted Danbury police. Officers proceeded to arrest Allen at his home in the 2000 block of S. Emerald Shores Drive.Allen remains in the Ottawa County jail on a $1 million bond. He awaits his arraignment in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court, which is expected to occur within this next week. "He is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with an individual whose ability to consent was impaired," Ottawa County prosecutor James VanEerten said. Allen claimed he has no money to pay a defense lawyer and requested a court-appointed attorney during his Aug. 16 appearance in Ottawa County Municipal Court. Allen was the general manager of Bay Point Resort, an all-in-one retreat featuring access to Lake Erie in addition to a golf course, beaches and a marina. He was terminated following his arrest.
