Officers on patrol for Bike Week

SANDUSKY — Police on Friday patrolled the streets in downtown Sandusky for Ohio Bike Week, as bands rocked large crowds with classic rock hits.All the noise can make it hard for officers to communicate."We need earpieces to hear our radios," said Sandusky police Lt. Rich Braun.Braun, along with Sandusky Officers Tony Bath and Jason Martin, waded through crowds on foot responding to calls, as did other groups of officers.Most of the officers' interactions with festival-goers didn't involve crimes — many people just stopped to chat. Martin, who is the school resource officer at Sandusky High School, also was greeted by several students.The officers, all of whom have worked Bike Weeks past, didn't encounter any serious incidents Friday. Braun, who said he's worked every Bike Week since its start, said in his time he's seen fights, professional pickpockets and a vehicle run over a biker's leg twice in the same incident.A list of calls the three officers responded to Friday• 11:05 p.m. — 100 block Columbus Ave., report of a fight involving 4-5 people. The fight ended before officers arrived.• 11:25 p.m. — 100 block Columbus Ave., allegedly intoxicated woman taken to the hospital.• 11:38 p.m. — Market and Jackson streets, officers were in the area when two man began to argue. The men were separated before anything happened.• 11:50 p.m. — 100 block Columbus Ave., fight reported, but officers did not find anybody fighting.• 12:20 a.m. — West Water Street and Columbus Avenue, physical altercation reported. Event security asked a man to leave.• 12:32 a.m. — 100 block Columbus Ave., fight reported, appeared to be over by the time police arrived.• 12:57 a.m. — 100 block Columbus Ave., fight reported, but police did not find anything.• 1:15 a.m. — 100 block E. Shoreline Drive, police called to a man who fell off a barstool and hit his head.
