Volunteers honored during Firelands event

SANDUSKY — Firelands Regional Medical Center honored its volunteers during an appreciation dinner occurring on Thursday at the Sandusky Yacht Club. The event coincided with National Volunteer Week. "The celebration recognized the dedication and generosity of individuals who contribute their time and talents across the hospital," according to a health care organizational statement. In 2025, Firelands Regional Medical Center volunteers collectively donated more than 10,500 hours of service. Based on the Independent Sector's valuation of volunteer time in Ohio, almost $35 an hour, these contributions represent an economic value of more than $365,700. The event gave special recognition to various volunteers celebrating milestones: • Five years — Cindy Carruthers • 10 years — Marta Adelman and Ed Pawlowski • 15 years — Bonnie Faber • 20 years — Bev Matthews • 50 years — Marty Sawicki Throughout volunteer week, Firelands spotlighted all its volunteers who assist in roles, such as patient and guest relations; special projects; pet therapy; and supporting areas, which include the dialysis center; information; desks and gift shops. Firelands Health's statement provided some background on and reasons why Sawicki enjoys volunteering: Sawicki began her volunteer work on Sept. 20, 1975. She dedicates the majority of her time to the Firelands Health gift shop, which generates proceeds that directly support patient care. After reflecting on her time at Firelands, Marty stated, "I have been blessed with a host of very good memories during my time." She said that volunteering at Firelands has given her purpose and friends. Marty has been active in the community, serving as a past board member on the Lange Trust of the Sandusky Library, the Harlequins Sandusky Community Theatre and the Plum Brook Country Club ladies auxiliary. When she isn't giving back, Marty is an avid reader and a passionate fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Guardians. She remains active with local groups, like the Out to Dinner Bunch and F20, and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Firelands Health extends its deepest gratitude to Marty for her five decades of selflessness, spirit and service.
