List: 2026 state road projects in Erie, Huron counties

HURON TWP. — The spring season always brings with it warmer weather, birds buzzing and construction cones seemingly popping up on every mile of road. In many cases, crews hired by the Ohio Department of Transportation are already hard at work across various project sites throughout Erie and Huron counties. Officials across all levels of government committed a combination of federal, state and local funds — collectively adding up to tens of millions of dollars — to smooth out bumpy sections, enhance traffic flow and even completely transform certain intersections. With information provided by the state transportation department, here's a look at crews fixing up roads, improving infrastructure and making travel for commuters and pedestrians safer: Keep in mind a few points: • All start and end dates are subject to change. • The price amounts only reflect state contributions. Erie and Huron counties fall under District 3 in the transportation department's boundaries. • All information comes from the state transportation department. Here's the list: Erie and Huron counties Area intersections • What/Where: Traffic signal upgrades at various intersections: — Ohio 13 and U.S. 250 — U.S. 250 and Shawmill Road/Church Street/Ohio 113 — Ohio 61 and Ohio 601 • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on June 1 and end by Aug. 27, 2027. Area roads • What/Where: Resurfacing along — Ohio 113 from U.S. 250 to Main Street in Milan — Ohio 99 from U.S. 20 to Ohio 113 • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on Aug. 3 and end by Nov. 30. • Cost: About $2.6 million Area greenspace • What/Where: Mowing grass along various routes • Impact: No traffic impact • When: Work should start on May 1 and end by Oct. 31. Erie County Castalia Fish Hatchery • What/Where: Resurfacing the hatchery's parking lot and roads • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on Aug. 3 and end by Sept. 3. • Cost: $182,000 Ohio 2 • What/Where: Resurfacing along Ohio 2 from just east of the structures over Frailey Road to the Lorain County line • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Starting earlier this month, all work should end by Oct. 16. • Cost: About $12.8 million Ohio 2 • What/Where: Resurfacing along: — Ohio 2 from just west of the Ohio 4 interchange to just east of Rye Beach Road — Ohio 4 from Bogart Road to West Perkins Avenue • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on June 1 and should end by Sept. 30, 2027. • Cost: About $15.4 million Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve • What/Where: Resurfacing all hard asphalt areas that haven't been treated in years, which also includes curb replacement and fog seal • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on June 1 and should end by June 15. • Cost: About $283,000 U.S. 6 • What/Where: Spanning from Cedar Point Drive in Sandusky through the Ohio 2 interchange at Rye Beach Road in Huron, "This project will increase the efficiency and operation of the U.S. 6 corridor for current and future traffic demands, enhance safety at high-crash locations while addressing areas of poor roadway geometry and improve multi-modal connectivity." Planned improvements include: — Constructing five roundabouts at East Perkins Avenue, Camp Road, Rye Beach Road and at two interchanges: U.S. 6/Ohio 2 at exit ramps to Rye Beach Road; Note: A roundabout under construction today at Cleveland Road (U.S. 6) and Cedar Point Drive is a separate project managed by Sandusky's government. — Resurfacing and widening U.S. 6 between Camp and Rye Beach roads to accommodate a center two-way left-turn lane. Construction of a 10-foot-wide multi-use path will also occur at the following locations: — Along the Sandusky Bay Pathway; This portion of the path will begin at Cedar Point Drive, cross over Pipe Creek in Castaway Bay and continue along Heron Creek Drive before turning south at East Shoreway Drive to continue east along the north side of U.S. 6, ending at Hemminger Ditch, near the entrance to the Landing Park. Development of The Landing Park will be administered separately by the city of Sandusky. — On the north side of U.S. 6 from the Cedar Point Sports Center to Rye Beach Road — On the east side of Rye Beach Road from Cleveland Road through the Ohio 2 interchange to University Drive at BGSU Firelands There will also be a pedestrian bridge over Sawmill Creek to accommodate the shared-use path. • Impact: "For the 2026 construction season, traffic along U.S. 6 will be maintained at all times. There will be ramp closures at the Ohio 2/Rye Beach Road interchange. The ramps at this interchange cannot be closed from June to October to accommodate Cedar Point traffic." • When: While some minor tasks have already occurred, construction in earnest should begin on June 1 and end by 2029. • Cost: About $40.3 million Huron County Ohio 303 • What/Where: Culvert replacement along Ohio 303 between Butler and Hanford roads • Impact: There will be a 30-day detour. Details have not yet been announced. • When: Work started in March and should end by July 31. • Cost: About $213,600 Multi-use path • What/Where: Construct a multi-use trail for Alpha Road in Greenwich Township to Town Line 79 in New London Township, which includes trail surface improvement from Townsend Street to North Kniffin Street in Greenwich. • Impact: Traffic maintained at all times • When: Work should start on May 25 and should end by Oct. 30. • Cost About $1.8 million Plymouth • What/Where: Replace the bridge between Bell and New streets over the Ashland Railway railroad • Impact: There will be a four-month-long detour. Details have not yet been announced. • When: Work should start on Aug. 6 and end by Dec. 7. • Cost: About $3.5 million
