75 years ago, 1943: Trappers in the Lake Erie area reported an estimated crop of 100,000 or more muskrats to be caught this season, which means approximately 50 tons of food product which will be used in replacing meats in some of the places where muskrat is considered good eating. Demand for muskrat is increasing rapidly and trappers are receiving as high as $2 per pelt.50 years ago, 1968: A truckload of pork on the hoof tipped over on Rt. 4, just south of the Ohio Turnpike, in the midst of "digging out operations" from the weekend storm. Sandusky Post State Highway Patrolmen said the truckload of hogs was bound for Sandusky from Lebanon, Ind., when the truck skidded on the icy road. Another truck was brought in to transport the animals to their final destination - slaughter.25 years ago, 1993: Seeking to defuse tensions, Iraq promised to stop firing at allied aircraft in "no-fly" zones if bombing raids halt. The U.N. later accepted an Iraqi offer to allow flights by weapons inspectors. Iraq said it wanted to give President-elect Clinton a calmer atmosphere after his inauguration to study the confrontation, which Iraq blames on personal animosity by President Bush for Saddam Hussein.10 years ago, 2008: Ever since a cluster of childhood cancer cases in the Clyde-Green Springs area was brought to health officials attention, parents have demanded answers. Several affected families met with local and state health officials and and Ohio EPA in hopes of finding out why children are being affected. From 2001-2006 there were 18 cases of childhood cancer in the Clyde area.
