Park project honors veterans

VERMILION — Local supporters and area officials on Wednesday broke ground for what's now known as Veterans Memorial Plaza at Showse Park in Vermilion. Key attractions at this site will include a new 60-foot flagpole, an illumination display, public seating areas and tributes, such as engraved names on bricks, around the plaza. Those who attended noted this marked a meaningful milestone for the greenspace and another visible step forward in Vermilion's east corridor development. The project will create a permanent space for reflection, remembrance and community gatherings centered around those who have served. Once completed, the plaza is expected to become a focal point for city observances, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, while also offering residents a place to visit year-round. The groundbreaking signals that the long-discussed memorial is now moving from planning into construction as part of the continued transformation of Showse Park. Crews ideally aim to finish this work in a few weeks with hopes of ending prior to Memorial Day, May 25. A lasting tribute takes shape Veterans' memorials often become more than just park features: They serve as gathering places for ceremonies, quiet reflection and shared remembrance while also helping connect future generations to the stories and sacrifices of local service members. In Vermilion, the Veterans Memorial Plaza is expected to carry that kind of lasting significance as part of the city's broader investment in public spaces and community identity. Construction is being led by Andrew Russell and his team at ADT Construction in coordination with the city's parks department. The project also includes an important contribution from Jacob Smith and the Lorain County Veterans Service Commission, which donated the flagpole for the memorial plaza. Smith, a 2000 Perkins High School graduate, serves as the commission's executive director. The commission contributed most of this $25,000 cost. Other money came from donations. No city money covered these costs. The Veterans Memorial Plaza represents another phase in the continued evolution of Showse Park, which has become a key part of ongoing improvements tied to Vermilion's east corridor development. Other projects of note include Sunnyside Road reconstruction along with other projects. "I truly believe this project is transforming Showse Park into what will become our area's premier park," city council president Jeff Lucas said. "It's not just about new amenities: It's about creating a space that brings people together," he added. "The Veterans Memorial Plaza, in particular, adds a deeper purpose. It will be a place where we can gather, reflect and honor those who have served while also enjoying everything the park has to offer. When it's all complete, this will be a destination our entire community, city and region can take pride in."
