Area standouts will compete in basketball, football all-star games

Six area athletes are scheduled to compete in a pair of longstanding all-star games this weekend. The OHSBCA North-South All-Star Games will take place Friday at Olentangy Liberty High School north of Columbus. Margaretta's Julian Washington will play in the boys basketball game while Bellevue's Kaitlyn Turinsky and Margaretta's Cassidy Lane will compete in the girls game. The girls game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys. All three area representatives will play for the North. The games are sponsored by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association. Washington, a 6-foot-5 guard who will play collegiately for the University of Dayton, will be representing Margaretta for the last time. "He has had an elite high school career and wants to showcase that one more time," outgoing Margaretta coach Steve Keller said. "Julian wants to win every basketball game he plays. He'll compete hard and have a lot of fun." Washington had a standout performance at the Ohio-Kentucky All-Star game earlier this month at Thomas More University in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Division V first team All-Ohio selection scored 19 points and was named Ohio MVP in a 114-91 loss. He also won the slam dunk contest and won the 3 on 3 championship with Jake Quackenbush from Newark and Xavier McKinney from Reynoldsburg. "He enjoyed himself down there and played with some of his AAU buddies," Keller said. "He shot it well and was 3 for 4 from the arc." Turinsky and Lane will be teammates on the North girls team after playing against each other the last few years. Both post players were first team All-Ohio selections this season. Turinsky, who will play college ball at Youngstown State, led Bellevue to a Division IV state runner-up finish in March. Lane, who will play at Gardner-Webb, led Margaretta to the Division VI state semifinals. The OHSBCA also will honor its coaches of the year Friday night. Bellevue's Kory Santoro (Division IV) and Margaretta's Ray Neill (Division VI) are among those who will receive awards. Three area football standouts will play Saturday in the 81st annual North-South Classic at Massillon Washington's Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. Huron's Landon Hohler, who will play linebacker next season at Walsh University, will be joined by offensive linemen Brady Dukeshire (Clyde) and Brycen Dunlap (Monroeville) on the Division IV-V-VI-VII North team. Hohler was an honorable mention All-Ohio quarterback last season in Division VI. He also played safety for the Tigers. Dunlap was a first team Division VII lineman for Monroeville. The Division I-II-III game will be played at 11 a.m. with the small-school matchup to follow at about 2:30 p.m. The players in the all-star game are chosen by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the gates on game day. First held in 1946, the North-South Classic is the nation's oldest-running high school football all-star game.
