Bissell's walk-off hit lifts Edison

MILAN TWP. — Peyton Bissell's single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Edison to a 5-4 Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division softball win over Port Clinton on Monday. The win extended Edison's winning streak to seven straight games. The Chargers are 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the SBC Bay Division. "We had to fight the whole game," Edison coach Jason Caponi said. "We were a little flat for some reason. We went and watched Ohio State (Sunday) and they hit six homers. I think all my girls were trying to be like the Buckeyes and overswinging." Stella Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh for the Chargers. Peyton Taylor and Abby Cloud both were intentionally walked to set up Bissell's walk-off hit. Port Clinton scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the matchup of Bay contenders. Lyric Jackson had a run-scoring infield hit and scored on a two-out error to bring the Redskins to within 4-3. PC tied it when Bella Belden singled to score Jae Mazur. Marissa Frohne took the pitching loss while striking out nine. She added two doubles at the plate. Gabby Howard also had two hits for the Redskins (10-6, 4-2). Edison picked up a key run in the bottom of the sixth. Lariah McMinn led off with a walk and stole second. With two out, Caponi put McMinn in motion and she scored on Macari Harris' bunt single. Harris and Bissell each finished with two hits. Taylor's triple in the fifth scored Brown to break a 1-1 tie. "It was nerve-wracking, but we had big hits when we needed them," Caponi said. Cloud got the pitching win, striking out 10 and walking only one. She allowed two earned runs. The win set up a showdown against Margaretta on Thursday. The Polar Bears lead the Bay with a 5-0 record and have won six straight games. "We knew we needed it with what we have coming Thursday," Caponi said.
