Mammogram bus provides free screenings for women

SANDUSKY — The Erie County Health Department and the Erie County Community Health Center recently hosted the Cleveland Clinic Mammogram Bus, providing free screenings to women aged 42 and older. This mobile unit brings high-quality diagnostic technology directly to the community, removing barriers to essential preventative health care. This successful collaboration has been ongoing for many years. At the event on April 14, 10 women received critical screenings that might otherwise have been inaccessible. Annual mammograms remain the most effective tool in the fight against breast cancer. Early detection through regular screening significantly increases the range of treatment options and improves long-term outcomes. "Early detection is not just a medical recommendation: It is a life-saving necessity," Erie County health commissioner Pete Schade said. "Bringing the Cleveland Clinic's expertise to our front door ensures that every woman in our county has the opportunity to take charge of her health." The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that clinical excellence is available to all residents, regardless of their proximity to a traditional hospital setting. "Providing this type of care directly to our residents is vital," said Heather Westcott, a registered nurse and the health department's senior chief clinical officer. "Mobile health services meet people where they are, providing a comfortable and convenient environment for essential care," Westcott added. "It is about closing the gap in health care access and ensuring our community stays healthy and informed." For those who were unable to last week's session, the Cleveland Clinic Mammogram Bus is scheduled to return to the Erie County Health Department on Nov. 18. In addition to these mobile events, the Erie County Health Department continues to be recognized for excellence in care, having maintained national gold awardee status for the past two years in a row.
