Family: Katelynn Shepard timeline doesn't add up

NORWALK — A 2018 Huron County Sheriff's Office report outlines a timeline in which Katelynn Shepard left her home voluntarily the night she was last seen. But her family is now disputing key parts of that account, pointing to text messages, prior statements and other information they say tells a different story. Katelynn, 21, a Huron County woman, died in 2018 after initially being reported missing when she failed to show up for work as a corrections officer at the Erie County Jail. She was found dead in a truck, which was located burned in a ravine off a rural Huron County road. Her death was ruled accidental, but questions from her family about the circumstances surrounding that night and the early investigation have persisted in the years since and came to a head earlier this week when a planned meeting with the Huron County Sheriff's Office to discuss the case was abruptly postponed. Welfare check The report, completed July 9, 2018, states that a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Greenwich East Townline Road for a welfare check after Katelynn did not report to work that morning. According to the report, Katelynn's boyfriend told the responding deputy that she left the residence around 8:30 p.m. the night before in a red Ford F-150 and was believed to be traveling southbound. He also told deputies it was not uncommon for her not to respond to calls or messages immediately. He further stated the truck had a litany of ongoing mechanical issues, including problems with the steering, transmission and brakes. He said he had previously driven Katelynn to work because of those issues. In dispute But Katelynn's mother, Tricia Shepard, doesn't believe the events as they were described. She also disputed the report's description of Katelynn's communication habits, saying her daughter would typically respond quickly, especially to close family members. "It was not normal for her not to reply right away," she said, adding that Katelynn had been in frequent contact with her sister the night she disappeared. According to her mother, Katelynn called her sister asking for help and said she needed to leave, describing the situation as "getting ugly." Text claims The family also questioned text messages sent later that night from Katelynn's phone, saying some did not match her usual manner or style. Her mother said she believes someone else may have been using the phone, though investigators have not confirmed that. "This isn't how my Katie sounded. This sounds like someone fishing for an answer about where she (Katelynn) was at," Tricia said. The sheriff's report does not indicate whether law enforcement conducted any forensic analysis of Katelynn's phone or examined the authenticity of these messages, and the sheriff's office has not responded to public records requests by the newspaper. Katelynn speaks Messages shared by the family with the newspaper from earlier in June 2018 show Katelynn describing ongoing conflict in the relationship. In one exchange dated June 14, she wrote, "I literally can't do this anymore" and later said the relationship "is never going to work." In the same conversation, Katelynn told a relative she believed her boyfriend had followed her to public places, including a racetrack where she said he "sat and watched" her with binoculars. Katelynn's mother described that incident as concerning. "(Katelynn) told me that the staff at the raceway had to kick him out because he was hiding under the grandstands with binoculars," she said. In other messages, Katelynn denied accusations of infidelity and referenced repeated arguments. The sheriff's report states that Katelynn told her boyfriend the night she disappeared that she had been seeing someone else. Her mother confirmed her daughter had begun developing a relationship with another person, but said Katelynn had planned to end her relationship with her boyfriend. "She was going to break things off," her mother said, adding she had urged her daughter to be careful. "That was going to be her last night being there." The report also describes the couple's future plans, stating that Katelynn was in the process of selling the residence and intended to move nearer to a racetrack where she could race horses. Her mother disputes that claim, reiterating that her daughter had been preparing to leave and move in with family instead. "She was moving in with me," she said, adding that Katelynn had already brought personal items, including documents, clothing and horse equipment, to her home and had asked to stay while she got on her feet. Moving out The report further notes little remained inside the residence, according to her boyfriend, a claim the mother also challenged. She said she had been inside the home shortly before her daughter's disappearance and did not believe it had been emptied. She also said some of Katelynn's belongings were later found secured in a horse trailer on the property, which she accessed after law enforcement had been at the residence. Questions have also been raised about the condition of the truck Katelynn was believed to be driving. While the report describes the boyfriend telling deputies that the truck had multiple mechanical issues, a June 3, 2018, social media post attributed to Katelynn states the vehicle had recently received a new transmission, alternator, calipers, wheel bearings and brakes. "She wouldn't have driven something like that if it wasn't running," her mother said. Deputy Joe Andrews completed the report, reflecting statements provided at the scene and not including findings from any subsequent investigation. The Huron County Sheriff's Office has not released details of any follow-up investigation, and as of this writing, it remains unclear if there have been significant public updates or developments in the case. The Huron County Sheriff's Office has not publicly addressed the family's raised discrepancies. The department has not said it believes the death is suspicious, nor has it ever announced any suspects or criminal charges.
