Ottawa County deputy charged for vulgar outburst

OAK HARBOR — An Ottawa County deputy will face criminal charges for allegedly harassing an Oak Harbor police officer. Deputy Jayson Hale was charged with disorderly conduct after he reportedly cursed at the officer in a Friendship food store, according to the incident report. Hale's wife, Christy, was charged with disorderly conduct, too. The Hale couple entered a Friendship Sunoco on Oct. 28 while Oak Harbor officer Eric Parker was speaking with a Carroll Township police officer. "I heard Jayson say 'F--- you, Parker,'" Parker said in his report. "I ignored the comment, but then I heard him say it again."Parker, who repeatedly asked Hale to stop, said he could smell alcohol on Hale's breath."I continued to ignore the comments when Jayson came an aisle closer and said twice 'Suck my d---, Parker,'" Parker said in his report. Hale eventually moved on, but his wife, Christy, allegedly continued to harass the officer. Before leaving the store, Hale reportedly turned and called Parker a coward.Parker charged Hale with disorderly conduct on recommendation from Ottawa County prosecutor Mark Mulligan. Hale historyThis wasn't the first time police dealt with Hale. In fact, he was suspended following a domestic violence call to his home in June. Police were called to Hale's home after his wife reportedly threatened to hurt herself. The couple were arguing when an officer arrived at their home, and Hale began threatening the officer, according to a police report.Although Hale wasn't charged for the alleged threats, he was demoted from the detective's bureau in the sheriff's office. The Register reviewed Hale's personnel file following his demotion. It revealed the deputy faced discipline numerous times in the past.Among the findings:• In June 2012, Hale was relieved of duty as the K-9 handler due to ongoing allegations of abuse against Nero, the office's K-9 unit. Hale previously asked to be taken off the unit several times.• In June 2012, he failed to report to work on time and was given a three-day unpaid suspension.• In March 2012, Hale was late responding to at least two calls. He was the K-9 handler and the calls required a K-9 unit on scene. He received a written reprimand.• In May 2007, he failed to check on a potential domestic violence victim and didn't accurately complete the investigation. The incident was between a man and his son. Hale found gashes on the son's head but never interviewed his father or checked on his condition. Hale was reprimanded and had his probationary period extended.• In May 2007, Hale ignored a direct order from his superior officer to arrest a driver for operating a vehicle under the influence. Hale was reprimanded and had his probationary period extended.• In December 2006, he didn't calibrate his breathalyzer, forcing the sheriff's office to toss readings taken of a person suspected of drinking and driving.
