Bodi N Balance boasts popular senior workouts

PORT CLINTON — Some of Ottawa County's golden-years residents found a new way to stay active. Bodi N Balance, a gym located in the Harbor Lights Landing Plaza near the intersection of Ohio 2 and Ohio 53, offers exercise courses for senior citizens. "We have classes for people of all ages and ability levels," Bodi N Balance owner Trevor Tieche said. "We have a huge retirement-age population over here."The classes are part of the Healthways Silver Sneakers Fitness program. The program offers fitness classes at little or no cost to millions of seniors nationwide. Bodi N Balance petitioned to bring the program to Ottawa County, according to a news release. Tieche explained how the program helps residents seeking a healthy lifestyle. "People need a routine," Tieche said. "Not staying consistent is one of the top reasons people struggle with staying in shape and living a healthier lifestyle. He continued: "It was important for us to set up a rewards system with the community. You can earn discounts for date nights if you go to the gym consistently."Tieche said the program encourages gym members to exercise at least 12 times each month, which averages to three workout session each week. Those who exercise at the gym can earn rewards for discounts at area businesses. Silver SneakersThe class is taught by certified Silver Sneaker instructors Kathy Tieche and Elizabeth Tarney. Instructors lead groups daily with easy, fun, low-stress exercise moves. This includes lifting exercise balls, walking in place, squats, and simple step movements. Residents of all ages, sizes and abilities share the same space to perform simple workouts. "To be functional as a senior is huge," Tieche said. Tieche pointed to the instructors' backgrounds as a key component in the program's success locally. For instance, Tieche said Tarney's experience as a dance instructor helps her instruct seniors in a way that could feel like dancing to a rhythm. "Keeping a rhythm during workouts can help expand your range of motion," Tieche said.
