Come out to Out in the Open

Editor's note: Joseph Jones is a Register correspondent representing vermiliondaily.com. VERMILION — What does public art really mean for a community like Vermilion? That's the focus of an upcoming event hosted by Public Art Vermilion in which residents are invited to take part in a hands-on activity and panel discussion exploring how art shapes public spaces and community identity. The event, titled Out in the Open, will take place Thursday, May 14 at Ritter Public Library, 5680 Liberty Ave. (U.S. 6) Vermilion. Admission is free, and no RSVP is required. The evening will begin with a hands-on art activity from 6-6:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from 6:30-7:30 p.m. featuring artists, advocates and placemaking professionals from across Northeast Ohio. "We're bringing together a dynamic group of public art professionals and passionate volunteers who have helped transform their communities through murals, sculpture, art events and more," said Marilou Suszko, chairperson of Public Art Vermilion. Who's taking part? Panelists scheduled to participate include: • Lauren Cieslak, Public Art Vermilion advisory board member, Tiny Art Gallery curator and art therapist • Joe Lanzilotta of LAND studio, a Cleveland-based nonprofit focused on public spaces • Joan Perch, founder and director of FireFish Arts in Lorain • McKenzie Spriggs, senior director of destination management for the Greater Sandusky Partnership Each panelist will bring a different perspective: from large-scale public projects to local, community-driven art initiatives. "Whether you're a strong supporter of public art or simply curious about its impact, this conversation will offer valuable insight and inspiration," Suszko said. Public Art Vermilion continues to explore ways to bring creative projects into public spaces throughout the city, and organizers say this event is designed to give residents a chance to learn more and be part of that conversation.
