Local school bus involved in multi-car crash

PERKINS TWP. — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a four-vehicle injury, chain-like reaction crash involving a Perkins school bus filled with children. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday on East Perkins Avenue near Bayview Lane. Students on the school bus, 52 in total when the crash occurred, were between preschoolers and fifth-graders, according to Perkins Schools. A report outlines what allegedly occurred: • An eastbound Ram 1500, operated by a 40-year-old Huron man, "failed to maintain an assured clear distance ahead and struck the back of a Perkins local school bus." • The school bus driver, a 66-year-old Huron woman, was slowing for stopped traffic ahead." • "The initial impact caused the bus to strike the rear of a Buick Encore" operated by a 68-year-old Huron woman, "who was then also pushed into the rear of a (different) Buick Encore operated by" an 83-year-old Sandusky woman." • "Two students suffered minor injuries and were transported, by ground ambulance," to a local hospital. • The Huron man "suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported, by ground ambulance," to the same hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
