'Dump Day' returns Saturday

SANDUSKY — There's no better way to begin spring cleaning in Sandusky than with a free litter-removal program open to all city residents. The semiannual Citywide Cleanup, also referred to as "Dump Day," occurs 8-11 a.m. on Saturday at the Shelby Street Boat Launch, 101 Shelby St., Sandusky. The event ends promptly at 11 a.m., and officials encourage residents to arrive early to ensure they can participate. This twice-a-year event, occurring in both spring and fall, not only helps residents rid themselves of unwanted items without having to pay for their removal but also cleans up neighborhoods. It's "an opportunity for residents of the city to bring unwanted items for disposal," according to an event statement. "Volunteers will be available to assist residents with unloading items." Officials also gave "a special thank you to Sandusky City Schools' Gentlemen's Club and Leading Ladies for volunteering to make this event possible and to our event partners: Firelands Local, Rumpke, Goodwill Industries, Home Depot, Ohio Tire Terminal and Sandusky Steel." Anyone who resides in Sandusky can participate. People must show a valid photo identification or other proof, such as a utility bill, before dumping off items. Among the materials: • Permitted — mattresses/box springs, unwanted household items, electronics, furniture, bicycles/exercise equipment, appliances, carpet, batteries, flat TVs, unwanted paper documents (limit two banker boxes per household) and passenger car and light truck tires (limit 10 per person and rims must be removed; Tractor tires won't be accepted.) • Prohibited — construction debris, hazardous waste, paint, propane tanks, liquid recycling, household garbage, prescription pills, commercial landscaping debris, residential yard waste (trimmings, sod, stumps, rocks, etc.) or old tube TVs; Volunteers won't accept any commercial trailer loads or oversized U-Haul loads.
