news@sanduskyregister.comPORT CLINTONLocals unaware of the dangers involved with social media joined an educational seminar lead by detectives. Their goal: teach parents and youngsters how to avoid trouble online. "This is a topic that reaches all of our students," middle school principal Carrie Sanchez said "Awareness is a critical part of helping our children grow up in a society that is very different than it was when we were young."Port Clinton Schools hosted a seminar lead by law enforcement officials to help parents and students understand new threats online. This isn't the first time the district hosted an education seminar for parents and students. In fact, Port Clinton Detective Corbin Carpenter recently lead a discussion about the dangers of sexting — sending nude photographs through text messages — impacting many students today. Sexting, human trafficking, and other online dangers pose threats to today's students, officials said. For instance, human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in Ohio, said Diane Kokinda, director of nursing with the Ottawa County Health Department. More than 1,000 children are forced into the sex trade in the state each year, she said. Officials showed an informative video explaining gritty details of human trafficking.Ottawa County sheriff's Detective Amy Gloor detailed her work with an investigation into human trafficking in Pennsylvania, which included ties to Toledo. "This is the fastest growing crime in the United States," Gloor said "It's only second largest to drugs. Most drug dealers are becoming pimps because they can make more money." Gloor said that the average age for a person forced into the sex trade is about 13 years old. Gloor encouraged parents to keep an eye on their kids' behavior and appearance. For instance, parents ought to watch for physical markings, appetite shifts, a sudden change in demeanor and strange schedules.
