Sandusky's road resurfacing program starting up

SANDUSKY — Starting this week, crews intend to begin a massive local street resurfacing program throughout Sandusky. Back in January, city commissioners approved a $1.1 million funding request to smooth out some of the area's bumpiest roads. This year's plan calls for overhauling many segments, collectively totaling about 3.6 miles. That's up from the original amount of 2.7 miles. While the updated plan does contain extra street segments — compared to January's original listing — officials did remove some sections of roads previously mentioned in the older plan for one reason or another. Officials do want to eventually treat these removed roads and could by 2027 at the earliest. Streets slated for enhancements were selected based on many factors, including pavement conditions, age, traffic volume, complementing neighborhood improvements along with feedback from residents and staff. "This year, we're continuing to resurface a significant number of streets across the city, building on the substantial amount of work we've completed in recent years," said Josh Snyder, the city's interim public works director. "This project, combined with the other work planned for 2026, represents a significant investment in Sandusky's neighborhoods." Partnering on a project Regarding the $1.1 million cost, city officials could receive a state-paid reimbursement of up to $100,000 for work occurring in and around Lane Street. "The funding opportunity is connected to LEWCO's planned facility expansion at 706 Lane St., which created an opportunity for the city to secure grant funding for improvements to the surrounding infrastructure," according to a city statement. "The Greater Sandusky Partnership assisted city staff in connecting the funding source to the planned economic development." Sandusky's local street resurfacing program complements other street improvements set for 2026. This would also include reconstructing a portion of West Monroe Street, paving a part of Camp Street between West Monroe Street and Frantz Road, among others. Here's a look at the tentative work schedule: • April 15-16 — The city's contractors will begin milling sections of McDonough Street, Market Street, Washington Row, Franklin Street and West Jefferson Street. • April 21-22 — Paving will take place on those street segments. • In the following weeks — Milling and paving on the remaining street segments will happen. • July 1 — All work should end. Residents should watch for "no parking" signs posted at least two days before work begins on a specific street. "Please do not park on (sections of) streets designated with 'no parking' signs," according to a city statement. "Roadway sections will be temporarily closed while crews are milling and paving."
