Letter: student brought bullet, casings to building

MILAN — An Edison Elementary School student reportedly brought a bullet and shell casings into the elementary school's before-school care program on Wednesday morning. The student brought in the casings and a .22 caliber bullet and began showing others, who quickly reported the student to staff, according to a letter from district superintendent Corey Ream addressed to "Edison elementary families." The Register independently obtained the letter. Ream's letter notes that the student was removed from the before-school program and sent home. Local law enforcement officials are involved with this incident, and the district will cooperate with them while addressing the situation in accordance with policies and procedures, the letter states. The Erie County Sheriff's Office is aware of the situation, according to Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth. He said the school notified Milan police about the incident, as it occurred within the village. The district notified families of the students involved in the incident that morning. Meanwhile, other elementary school families were informed by the district's letter just before 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. There was no threat made to staff and students, according to the letter. "We take any concern very seriously and respond immediately to ensure the well-being of our students and staff," Ream's letter stated. "We are grateful to the students who spoke up — this is exactly what we encourage. This situation is a reminder of the importance of, 'See something, say something.' If a student hears or sees something concerning, it is essential to report it to an adult right away." Ream's letter encouraged families to have conversations with students about school safety and the importance of not bringing prohibited items to school and speaking up. The letter also thanked district staff and administration for the quick reaction and local law enforcement for continued collaboration with the district. "We appreciate the partnership we share with our families in reinforcing this message," the letter states. "When families and schools work together, we strengthen our ability to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all students."
