Local golfers pick up plenty of hardware

HURON TWP. — Local golfers fared quite well in the 26th annual Ohio Senior Hall of Fame Championship tournament at Plum Brook Country Club.There were 21 participants in all, and nine walked away with gift certificates — three in the gross (actual score) division and six for net (with handicap) scores.Roger Tolley (Willard) finished first in his age group (50-54) for actual scoring with 70-73—143, Ron Bordman (Norwalk) finished second with 147.Sandusky's Jan Sadoski earned he top award in the upper Senior Division (70 and up) with back-to-back 76s on a 12 handicap and actually had the lowest net score for the entire field at 128.However, the super seniors did not figure in the overall picture because they played from the white tees for the 36 holes.In the net divisions, Don Gustovich (Huron) was first in the Super Division category with 136 and Bill Monaghan (Sandusky) second at 139. Gustovich had 82-86 on a 16 handicap and Monaghan 89-84 on a 17 handicapHuron's Sticks Gioffre and Milan's Harry Perdue were tops in their age groups for net play.Gioffre had 145 for players 65-69 and Perdue a 142 in the 55-59 age bracket. Gioffre improved from 91 to 82 while Perdue tallied 79 on an eight handicap for the second time.Two more local entrants finished second in net play.Norwalk's Chris Bleile (50-54) had 145, Bellevue's Randy Rankin (55-59) cashed in at 142.Tolley talked about his play."I did not putt like I did yesterday and doubled No.10 when I shanked my second shot into the water," he said. "However, I'm happy with the way I played overall and shooting 143 here for two days is pretty good in my opinion. I had a couple of birdies and scrambled a lot on other holes."Sadoski was happy, to say the least."To shot 76s both days is something special for me," he said. "I hit the ball well both days and was one-under par after the first five holes. I bogeyed No. 1, then birdied 2, 3 and 5 with a par on No. 4. "I had 36-40 for 76 today, an I'll take that at anytime," he added. "I'd also like to say how much everyone I talk to appreciates all the work Craig (Soule) and Lori (Smith) do to make this tournament successful. It's a great experience and I wish more local golfers would play in it."Gioffre also paid tribute to Soule and Smith."They do a great job of making it what it is and I know the guys who come here from outside the area really look forward to this tournament," he said. "As for me, my score was a lot better, but I still didn't hit the ball like I should.
