Armed man taken into custody

MILAN TWP. — Police took an armed man into custody in the Milan area on Monday. In the early afternoon, a woman called 911 after she tried to help a man who was stumbling down Milan Road (U.S. 250) north of Mason Road. At one point, the man reached down to retrieve a pill bottle and what looked like a firearm, Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said. It was at that point that the woman called the authorities. When the man saw sheriff's deputies arriving in the area, in the 9500 block of Milan Road (U.S. 250), he reportedly put a gun to his head and bolted into a nearby field. The county's special response team — the equivalent of SWAT — was activated and responded to the scene. He was taken into custody without incident after a brief search. While the search was ongoing, the nearby EHOVE Career Center went on lockdown. That lockdown, which lasted about 20 minutes, was lifted once the situation was under control. The man was transported to Fisher-Titus by ground ambulance for evaluation. Sigsworth said the man lives in Clyde and left a note before driving his company vehicle back to his employer before beginning his walk down Milan Road. The man also reportedly spoke with his employer and told them where they would be able to locate his body, somewhere along Milan Road. After evaluation, the man was set to be transported to Erie County Jail with undetermined charges. He would undergo additional mental health screening at the jail, Sigsworth said. As of late Monday, police did not identify the man.
